The Bronx Zoo is pratically across the street from the botanical gardens - admission is by donation on Wednesday's ;)

Any info regarding the boat trip around manhattan? Might be able to save me some work. That is definately something I want to hit up though!

In order to avoid a long wait we took a private tour boat that took a one hour tour around Manhattan. It was a guided tour that provided a lot of interesting history of the sights. You get on the boat at Battery park and I think it cost about $20. The only downside was that the boat didnt have docking priviledges anywhere other than Battery park, so we couldnt get off at the Statue of Libetry or Ellis Island. The boat stopped just off the Statue Of Liberty so we were able to get some great photos.

I would highly recommend this tour if you are really in a hurry....you get a lot in an hour, and the high ticket price ensures there are no line ups (the other boats are $2!!)

Great thats really helpful! Can I just go there and ask for hte private tour? do you need to go with a group? It might just be me unfortunately... there for work. It would be super nice to go in the evening. Can they arrange that?

There are also great double decker open air buses that tour the city and you can get on or off as you please, great photo ops.

B&H

I'm considering having the taxi from the airport drive me not to my hotel, but to you know where.

After all, Im going there partly to take photos... I "need" (emphasis:quotations) some new equipment!

Remember B&H is closed from Friday afternoon to Sunday morning.

There's so much to do and see. Times Square at night is so well lit you'll be able to shoot without flash at midnight.

have fun. be careful. protect your wallet.

its here

and there is a map showing where different birds have been sighted....the park is in the middle of a flyway and many birds stop for a rest during the migration

You could also take a trip to the New Jersey side of the Hudson River. Fantastic views, especially at night, of the West side of Manhattan.

Brookyln side of the Eas River below the Brooklyn bridge is another "classic" location.

That's what I would do, too! The zoo and gardens don't appeal to me, but that's mostly because Denver has great ones...

Street photography is what would most attract me and the best way to do that is to get out there and walk around! And that link that jjackfllash posted has a *great* map to Central Park. Well worth taking a look at.

edit: Here's a pretty nice site... you can poke around the different neighborhoods... I saw at least one walking tour outlined there.

If you have a full day to kill I would say West Point. less then an hour drive from NYC or you can boat trip it up the hudson.

Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Get on the south side of it when you come off the bridge in Brooklyn. Old Fulton street runs almost underneath the bridge back to the East River bank. There is a pedestrian pier at the foot of Old Fulton where you'll bump into a dozen other people taking shots back across the river at Manhattan. Especially at night. It's a nice view.

While you're at it, Grimaldi's is a pizza place on Old Fulton that offers the classic thin crust NY style pizza. Very good stuff.

Agreed ... that is pretty much what I did. I walked everywhere mainly and stuff just appears to shoot if you have the eye to see. Plenty of diners for taking a break (and some to shoot in!) Get a decent guide book and read it on the plane and make a list on a map and then go walk. You may find that what you see between 'sites' is more interesting than the sites themselves ... depends what you like tho'.

Lots of great ideas in this thread. I'll add one more that won't cost you any money and will give you some great views of the city/statue of liberty: Staten Island Ferry. It's free to ride both ways.

Cool man!
I take NYC for granted so it gives me perspective on things.

I'm always like "Man, there is nothing to shoot unless I go outside of the city".

Obviously it's from a lack of trying!!!

Yup; this is the view less than 5 minutes from the famous Grimaldi's pizza :
