Well I am new to photography and new to the forums and just bought myself a Canon S50.
Could someone explain to me about the ducks, 10D and L(s) on the forums... I have been reading for a couple of days and I feel like I am missing some critical info. :?:

Welcome!
Well, several of us on the board love ducks. Many others take pictures of ducks and post them for us to enjoy. And we do enjoy them. (Somewhere on this board I'm sure that some people just hate ducks, but nobody's spoken up yet.)
"L" is a type of Canon lens, their Luxury models (I think that's what the L stands for). But they're a very nice lens and high quality for the most part. They're also expensive, many very expensive, some are ridiculously expensive. To be able to afford them you have to give up some other luxuries, like food. If you eat only Kraft Dinner for 6 months you've saved enough for an L lens.

And for those obsessed with ducks and geese, the "L" also stands for "L"oonies (lunatics) but you didn't hear that from me.
BTW, Miti, have you heard about the initiation you have to go through to become a full-pledged member of this forum? You have to take at least two shots of ducks and geese and post them for all to see. 8)
Just kiddin'. Welcome to the forum! :D

... if your usual habit was going to a 5 star restaurant every day, before ...

180 days * $4 a day = $720. That buys either the 70-200 f/4 or the 17-40. And that's if you spend a measly $5 a day currently, figuring 3 boxes of Kraft Dinner and a couple jars of spices and herbs for flavoring...
We had a thread around here with some Kraft Dinner "recipes" at some point... Most are terrible - especially after the third try - but they're still better than KD 3 times a day. :)

as for ducks and geese... umm I live in the desert. Those are a little hard to come by here.
But thanks for the warm welcome :)
I have to say... this is one of the funniest forums I have visited. And funny can never be wrong.

Welcome Miti.. Here is my take and I been here just a little while.
Ducks are funny,( as in Donald Duck), fun to take pic's of and they strike some funny poses :D We have fun with ducks,, and some are obsessed with them
10D is a fantastic canon SLR camera.. :? My opinion
(L) glass, (L) lens are canon's best lens,, better glass, better build and 2 or 3 or 4 times the cost of non (L) lens  as others mentioned sometimes you need to skip a few other necesities in order to get one :D

The word "obsessed" has been used twice in this thread... I don't think Ian's going to like being called obsessed. I, for one, wouldn't want to be called obsessed. Because I'm not obsessed. Nope. The voices tell me that I have too many differing opinions to be obsessed with any one particular thing.

/me hides all her duck and goose pictures ...
How about a cockatiel picture or two? :D
Welcome to the board!! I'm new here too, and so far it's pretty lightbeat and cool around here! I belong to a dozen different boards though so I don't get to hang our with these "loonies" too often ... though late at night I peruse around the board for some of the fabulous tips and tricks all these highly intelligent loonies pass on ... :D
I'm only half initiated ... I haven't found a goose pic worthy of gracing this forum yet :(

Thats rediculous, you need variety in your diet. Now maybe everyother day instead of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese dinners you could have instant mashed potatoes with a little butter and add some canned sweet corn. A slice of bread and you have a meal for less than a dollar. Now with these extra savings you can buy a chicken, a whole fryer. Cut it up and freeze it in single parts. A couple of times a week you pull out a piece of chicken or two and thaw it out and have it the next day with your dinner. Now if you can get 4 meals out of that chicken combined with the less than a dollar a day 'tater corns you could be eating dinner for about $10 a week. Man think of the money you could save and how quickly you could afford just about any L lens or top of the line DSLR you'd desire.

See, what you guys need to do is buy a slow cooker.
Get chicken on sale. Great big bag of rice. Maybe some beans.
Throw all that in slow cooker (well not the rice, make that later). Add some water, let it cook 8-10 hours on slow or 4-6 on high.
Toss in some veggies if you happen to have poached a garden (not that I do this ... just most men don't seem like the type to go out of their way and buy them  So I give them the fun option ;)) ...
Then you'll have a nice chicken dish that should last you 2 to three night, costing less than a buck each time ;)
We're not saving for lenses, but we're saving for a house, and I've figured out how to keep 4 of us (all adults - we have a couple of friends staying with us on and off) for less than $30 a week, breakfast, lunch and dinner!
:D
And that includes a nice yummy fried egg and cheese bagel most mornings ;)
