Hi. I'm switching from Nikon to Canon to be able to eventually use the better canon digitals cameras (imho). I'm looking at afilm body 30, 3 or 1N first, but stuck on lens choice. How good is the 17-40 L zoom 's optical quality compared to the 20mm , 50mm primes? Budget is not really a problem.

I have a Canon fixed 28mm F1.8 which is very good - but the 17-40mm F4.0L is much better in my opinion. So much so that my 28mm is now up for sale!! (not a bad lens but less flexible for my type of pics)
Last year with a fixed 28mm on my 10D:

With the 17-40mm 4.0L:

who wouldn't... but £32,000 v £33,000,000 reduced my choice somewhat...!!!! (and the orange one doesn't have a leather interior!)[/code]

The tornado has a better acceleration, a higher top speed, and doesn't bother when the road has reached its end... it just lifts off

If I had either one, I'd sell it and buy lenses! :)
But back to the original question - I have the 17-40 L as well - it is a superbly clear lens. I don't have any wide primes to compare it with, though I do have a 'standard' 50 mm f/1.4 (which is also great, though a little bit soft wide open).
Interestingly, KBM's 28 f/1.8 is somewhat interesting, as it would make a good "normal" lens on my 10D, due to the sensor size. However, since I got the 24-70 f/2.8, I'm not as interested in a fast lens in that range.
