i recently purchased an xti kit with 2 lenses. i thought the 75-300mm zoom was broke so i called the distributer. they sent me a new lens without any instructions to return the original! turns out there was nothing wrong with the original, just newbie ignorance. what to do what to do?
i should do the right thing and call to see about returning the original but i cant seem to make up my mind. sell it for a different one or return it?????????

I can't imagine they will let you keep the original. Ethically, you should return one of the lenses.

Karma my friend......it'll always come back if you do the wrong thing. I'd say call, and find out how to return it. But that's just me.

Follow my three step procedure:
1. Rigorously test them both. Look for front or back focus. Sample variation exists.
Determine if one is better optically in some way than the other.
2. Call the distributor and ask them how to return the 'defective' copy and if they will
cover the shipping charges.
3. Ask yourself why it seemed like a good idea to reveal you have trouble with simple
ethical puzzles and whether this will reflect on how others will perceive and deal with
you.
I myself would wait till they charged my card for it, then do something about it. But I'd
keep that to myself... Hah. Just kidding.

I wonder why people even ask these types of questions. What are you looking for, someone to justify your decision to keep them both, it doesn't matter what anyone tells you to do, simply put it is a matter of ethics, you know what is right and what is wrong, why ask. Do the right thing, period.

Keep the better of the two and make a sincere effort to return it.
If they are indifferent to the idea, then what are you going to do right?
A few years ago, I ordered a 32" TV and they delivered the 36". I mentioned it but they ("they" as in the delivery guys) were pretty indifferent to the idea of hauling it back (TV weighs 300lbs) and bring back the correct one.
So I kept it...the price difference was around $600 - $800 at the time.
I guess some of us would go the extra mile to return something. I, on the other hand, don't have the patience. I'll give it a sincere go at it, but if it takes more than that, then it's fair game in my book...

OK, You decide to buy another item from the seller.
Your card gets charged but no item arrives. You contact them and they say it's been delivered and signed for.
Is the seller in the right or have they stolen your money ?
Return one of the lens!

Been there too. It's awkward when you TRY to do the right thing but the situation won't let you.

Keep the better lens, and offer to return the other - you don't have to tell them you've decided there is nothing wrong with it - i am sure good stuff gets returned all the time by people who have imagined faults. Just read some threads over in the lens section!
But you have to at least make the attempt to return the 'defective' lens - if they don't want it then fair enough.
The only opportunity for you here is to avoid becoming a thief.

I see no moral dilemma here. And from your post, neither do you. You know what the right thing to do is--you point it out in your post.
The dilemma you see before you is one of character--YOURS. I feel sorry for people like you who do not know whether or not to do what is right. I guess it's not so much your fault as it is your parents' for not raising you in a way that makes this situation easy for you to navigate. A Stephen Colbert "wag-of-the-finger" at your mom and dad.

Honesty and a reputation for honesty will follow you all your days. Many times honesty will seem to be a poor choice but the reality is it pays dividends. I chucked a job where the boss wanted me to use and sell pirated software. That didn't sit right with my morals and my wife and her family thought poorly of the employer and well of me for announcing why I was quitting.
I would much rather be poor but honest than to live on stolen goods. My conscience is worth more than that. Aside from that - what would you say when you meet God? Would you say "yeah. I'm a theif. Roast me in Hell for eternity" or would you say "I'm honest, open the gates to paradise".

That makes me feel better! :) I didn't mean to offend any younger folks, but that was the excuse that was used as to why the person I quoted would have kept the lens... because he was young.

You don't have to break into the photo shop in the middle of the night to be a thief. If you keep something you know you haven't paid for, you're stealing from the store. I don't know about you, but when I look at myself in the mirror, I want to see an honest face. Send it back.

I suspect that he may have misinterpreted your response -- I noticed that because of the way that it was worded, there is the possibility for misunderstanding of what you meant. I am glad to see that you clarified your statement for those who may have gotten the wrong idea.

Thanks Bill, I edited my first statement to clarify that I wouldn't keep the lens, I would return it.
Still it was a bit harsh of JWright to say I wasn't raised properly and deserve no respect. Had I returned the lens or not.

good for you doing the right thing.. I was raised with some pretty strict moral codes.. (a lot of people laugh at me over them) but, more than anything i'm superstitious.. I'd be scared to death of whatever kharma was going to give back to me if I had even considered stealing...

Back in the day I would so0o00o sell it here. Heck I'd sell both and get something better!
Now...I'd sell locally and disappear. Well, before I would have left a trail.
Seriously though, I'd call, see what's up. Wait awhile and then sell it. I've had it happen where I called trying to return something but they never called me back on how to. So a month later it was sold!

I'm glad to see that apart from the 'young guy' who thinks he's the fittest, the hypocrites , saints and casters of the first stone have won out. Just because you are young doesn't excuse theft and dishonesty. He made it sound like it's cool to be a low-life - perhaps not the point he was trying to make, but certainly the result achieved.
I also feel that we have ALL possibly over reacted to the OP's original question - i doubt that keeping the lens was ever realistically considered and the thread was posted more for advice than anything else. And as usual, there has plenty of that!
Congratulations on making the right choice. Life is nicer this way.

If there was nothing wrong with the original lens you have no choice but to return the one that they sent.
You will never regret doing the right thing, but you may always regret doing the wrong thing.

I had a lexmark printer go bad and they sent me a new one under warranty and said if I feel like it they will send a return label so I can send the broke one back.
Electronics are so cheap and the 75-300 is no exception , call them if they don't want it back, you're gain.
Realy the lens cost $170 to you, Cost $70 to make, if that, minus shipping and $40 to repair,Now their cost is 70 plus 40 plus 10 shipping, now their cost is $120 and what can a refurb go for $150 is that worth their while?
is it that they forgot or Don't care whether it's a doorstop.

Too late
According to one person you are damaged goods and will never sell anything on this forum ever again because you lack moral fibre.
Me personally i think you are a person who did the right thing and innocently asked the wrong people what you should do.
I'd buy something from you without hesitation;)
