As some may have noticed, I have sold my mighty MkIIN as well as several lenses. Now, I am almost coming to the point where I could stop selling any further gear and still have plenty left...in fact, more than enough left.

Granted, I did end up selling some lenses I should have perhaps kept, but one has no control over the demand.....you display the wares and people pick what they want.

Also, reselling stuff which was bought new by a Canadian (i.e., myself), does involve a significant financial penalty......much to do with our sales taxes etc.

On the positive side, I have had the pleasure to meet most of my buyers face to face, some of them old POTN friends like Dr. Zuckerpferd. Seeing people happy with their purchases from me has been a required part of my transacting in gear.

So, what are my gear acquisition plans now ?
Here it is:
* EOS 40D and/or 5DMkII.
No series 1 cameras for me any more until Canon proves able to deliver genuinely better bodies for less money. I think the MkIII may be a step in the right direction performance-wise, but not price-wise.
* EF200 f/1.8(2) IS....if they ever come up with it, and if it's worth the price to me.
* I probably need a superwide angle zoom of some sort. I can not tell if the 16-35 f/2.8 MkII is really better than my old MkI (which I thought was excellent)....one way to find out would be to buy it.;)
* The 50 f/1.2 is on my list when Canon fixes that aperture dependent backfocus anomaly.

That's about it. For me.

As a recipient of your generosity, I am of two states of mind on this post.:(

I am enjoying the 300 F4 L IS, and really appreciate your "cleaning out the basement" sale.:D
But I feel for the loss of these friends of yours and the financial hit we Canadians take:(

5DMKII? Isn't this release a long way away?

Next time I'm through Toronto/Mississaugua I can let you visit with your lost friend!! Wouldn't mind meeting you as well:lol:

Best Regards,

Jim, you are da man !
Next time you in Toronto, we must shoot some ducks, come hell or high water.
Oh, I am very happy you got that lens......just remember, I've still got three 300mm primes left.
If you would need anything else, please do let me know if I can provide.
I know nothing about the 5DMkII at this point.

Sounds like a good plan to me - I'd recommend the non-existent 5D Mk II since I'm pretty happy with my full-framer. The 1D3 sounds excellent, but it's a price I'm not willing to pay.

I'm somewhat interested in that 50/1.2 as well, though like yourself, I'm holding off for perfection (well, that and I think the superfast 85 is a really good match for the 5D).

the 16-35 II is better in the corners than the Mk I in the aperture range of f/2.8 to f/8. Probably not an issue on the 1.6X bodies. It seems to have less barrel distortion at the wide end, and seems also to be less susceptable to flaring vs. the older version.

Tom

PS - you've got PM!

Yeah, sounds like an improvement on an already fine lens, eh.
Tom, I responded to your PM.

And here I was thinking you were giving up photography totally, especially when you added a number of lenses to your original list.

I thought you may be going over to the dark side.

Glad you're considering buying more stuff. I too would love the 200 f2.8 IS. I can't even hold my 135 steady, or the 85 for that matter.

How about the ability of the MKIII to adjust focus for specific lenses. Seems like that would take care of any percieved problem with the 50 1.2.

I played with that lens at the PhotoPlusExpo and it had absolutely no focusing problems that I could detect.

Nikon have at least two lenses which I like: 200 f/2 VR and that 400mm supertelephoto f/4 zoom.;)

That Nikon 200-400 f/4 zoom is a very desireable lens. Canon needs to do a notch better.

Ain't competition great? :)

I agree with you on the 200 VR2, but how is their 400 different? Does Canon only have the 400 2.8 and then the 5.6?

I like their 200-400 f4, but I don't like the price.

And btw, it's Nikon HAS, not Nikon HAVE. :p

Not quite, Nikon (as a Corporation) can be regarded as a "pluralia tantum" noun, thus "have" would be correct.;)

Peter selling all that gear is like physics, you can take it slow and climb a gradual path or climb a latter to get there quicker but in the end you use the same amount of energy.
It's nice to get it done and over with and sell everything at once as buying and selling gear can be a pain. Glad to hear you got to deal with some great members. It sure makes it less stressfull. :)

Want to buy a 135L :)

You are right about that, Danny.
Sorry, I do not need another 135L, one I've got is enough.;)
