Can you give the context in which the phrase was used?

"Selling out" means doing something for the money instead of for the sake art or creativity.

"Pop culture" means what is currently popular or a fad.

Basically it means, IMO, to create for the money for what is currently popular instead for your art.

Thanks for the "simplify" translation :) . I was reading some Wikipedia stuff about bands/songs which were sell outs to pop culture.

I think has more to do with compromising artistic or core principles for the sake of popularity and money. There are many who become rich and popular while remaining "pure" to their respective art forms. They don't seem to be labeled "sell outs."

Punk followers are where you'll see persecuting sellouts a lot. Bands like Green Day were immensely popular with the underground crowd... until they scored a record deal. Now, the underground community shuns them for "selling out." They believe punk is a lifestyle, and anyone profiting from this lifestyle is selling out to "the man," (punk's enemy). Ideally, they want their idols to be dirt poor, but still make awesome songs all the time .

Selling out is less prevalent in other forms of music. KISS wasn't labeled a sellout until they did a disco record, and even then only hardcore metal fans were dismayed. Most people understand that artists need to make money to survive, and thus "selling out" is ok as long as you still make music.

Many said Led Zeppelin finally sold out by selling the rights of their song 'Rock & Roll' from their fourth album to Cadillac for commercials. Or The Who for selling the rights to three of their songs for the CSI shows.
