View Full Version : Developing new printer profiles

Recent threads on monitor calibration and colour management have helped achieve a good setup – but, it appears, unless the ICC profile for the printer/ink/paper combination is correct, prints will never quite match the monitor image.

I am using the excellent Canon i950, which can produce great quality. But if the paper used does not match one of the ‘canned’ options, the print does not match the monitor. So, is it possible to develop a profile for each new paper type? Ideally it would be possible to edit the profile in the event that a colour cast is introduced with a new paper or ink batch.

The i950 does not come with ICC profiles for specific media. Newer Canon printers apparently are being shipped with media-specific profiles. See this Canon publication for guidance:

You can create your own profiles or purchase them from others. Which way you go depends on how serious you want to get. You can spend more on monitoring and printer calibration/profiling hardware and software than you spent on the original printer!

Start here to look at color profiling solutions:

And here for available ICC profiles for Canon and other photo papers

Personally, I find the generic profile supplied with the Canon i950 software to be adequate for my needs. My goals are rather modest; yours may be higher. :) :)

Thanks for the info - I have tried the profile from wandb with good results for one print. The Ilford site gives some profiles, but only for Epson printers.

I am mainly using Ilford Classic Pearl paper but the recommended High Gloss Photo Film setting is not available when printing borderless.

Incidently, due you have a fix for the preview for landscape prints being shown in portrait orientation - i.e. turned through 90 degrees. Most annoying!
