OK, I'm resigned to not having RAW in my G7 - I bought it knowing that, and although I feel it would be a better camera with it, I can make do with just JPG.
Today I start looking over the manual to get familiar with a few icons I don't recognize, and there on page 20 of PSG7CUGad-EN.pdf (which I downloaded from the Canon web site) is an icon for RAW. Now I'm asking myself if the decision to not have RAW may just be a matter of a different firmware version or what! Anyone else notice this? Is this download for a version not sold here? Why is there a RAW icon on page 20 of the manual?

As far as I know there is no RAW hack for the DIGIC III cameras as yet.
Thats one of the reasons why I ordered the A710 IS DIGIC II camera over the G7.
I'm ure there will be one in the future when most of thier p&s cameras become DIGIC III

If you have PSCS3 you can use the ACR converter on JPGs.

I'm just trying to understand why I would take a JPG, convert it to RAW, stick it on media and plug it into this camera. Would that be so I can see the RAW icon come on? Because it seems to me that's about all I could do with it. Not trying to be a wiseguy, but there must be more than that...

Hi, benttop.
As I understand, one of the last four icons on pg. 20 will be displayed if the G7 finds a file written to the card by another device in a format not used by the G7.

You are NOT converting it to RAW, you just use the RAW converter to adjust the JPG and it will give you more adjusting power such as using "Recover" to possibly recover image data from blown out highlights and "Fill light" to brighten up the shadows without brightening the entire image. I am not saying you need to run out an buy PSCS3 for this feature, just mentioning the possibilities if you have it. If you have used ACR, especially in CS3, you would see the power of this tool over most other image editors.

I see. I have and use CS2 ACR - been waiting for someone to give me a reason to upgrade! Thanks.

I almost bought the G7 because of ACR in CS3 and PP there. Just didn't like the price nor the noise at high ISO. Raw was also a factor. Price is dropping fairly good right now so may still get it. Read that the G6 is still a good alternate and that has RAW.
