Further thoughts on fashes

I was thinking of getting a Metz hammerhead bcause I've used them before. New they're horribly expensive!

I have a 420 EX and am now wondering whether I could pair a 420 and a 420/430, putting both on some kind of frame attached to the camera. Has anybody done this? It strikes me that 2x420s should give me double the power (instead of GN 42, GN 86).

If you double the flash power, the guide number doesn't double. It goes up by a factor of 1.4. Two 420EX units together (theoretically) would have a GN of 59 meters.

But I don't know of any way to connect two E-TTL flashes together. I suppose you could wire together a couple sync cords, but I have know idea how well it would work. If you had a 550EX or 580EX you could use one with a 420EX in master/slave mode and take advantage of the extra power. It would be kinda heavy though.
