So I bought a 70-200 f/4L with my Digital Rebel. It this lens really honks, but I want more. The place where I bought the lense wll allow me to return it for full credit on a badder lens. I am thinking of purchasing the 70-200 f/2.8L IS, and sneaking in a 2x extender in the near future (the bonus of this is that the "switch" will go un-noticed). The other option would be the 100-400L IS. This isn't as fast, but doesn't need the extender to go way out, and still has the IS while being a little less expensive.
Of course I could just keep the 70-200 f/4L and get the extender. Not as versitle as either of the others due to the loss of aperature with the extender, and I would have to use a tripod. I could, however, make 2 payments on my car and make my wife feel like the center of the universe for a night with the extra money.
What would you do?

L O V E ? Of Canon "L" lenses of course. LOL
Join the I am so broke but I have Canon "L" lenses club. New members are always welcome.
Get a good monopod and get use to the weight and you will be fine with your purchase. I have the 100-400L and I do love the lense but you do need light. I am thinking of purchasing the 70-200L 2.8 but that is a luxury, I need the 85 1.2 first.
So either way you go, I am sure you will be happy. Wait until you get into primes...That is another story in itself. But, we will wait until the wife leaves you that way she won't go beserk.
All the best and WELCOME TO HAPPY BROKE TOWN.

I tend to shoot alot of landscape type of things. The marina, some buildings, and what ever else seems to be of interest as a large mass. I also really like to photograph animals. This is mostly relegated to the zoo as I am stuck in the downtown of a rather large metropolitan area. I do not capture many images of people (unless it is of a particular event, and someone asks me to do it. Usuall these people requre me to take pictures of them standing in a line, "and don't cut off our feet" Yea. Ever hear of a disposable 35mm camera? ). I would also like to be able to have a longer lense for taking pictures indoors, but this is on the list of things that I want it to do, not need it to do. There are a number of sports teams who play a few blocks away (areana football, soccer, pro basketball, minor league hocky, the collage tournament even visited this year) so I might as well try that as well. I have never done any kind of sports photograpy, aside from race cars and offshore boats (boats a few blocks away as well, but only once a year, marina all the time)
I intend it to pretty much the only other lens I will have, aside from an undetermined wide angle zoom to cover what is left under the small end of the lens I end up buying. I guess that I would value versitility a little more than image quality, since I can not see the difference between these two lens' quality anyway. I understand that some people find problems with the 100-400 around the edges at some aperature, but at the same time it is not a problem with the digital camera since it only uses the center of the glass.
I am not a professional. I am basically going to shoot everything, and if it works out, I'll do it again. I shot the moon tonight. Unfortunatly my tripod will be here tomorrow (old one was lost, or stolen), so you can guess how that turned out :? .
Thanks,
Greg

What are the qualities of a "good" monopod? I have one, but I am very ineffctive using it. It has a cup that screws into the tripod boss on the body, and you sort of plop it on the top which is spherical. The cup is rubber and it kind of "suction cups" on to the ball. Are the ones where the camera solidly screw onto the monopod more effective?

NiL,
Yea. Primes = OUCH! I was a bit conserveative when I bought the 70-400 f/4. When it arrived and I shot some pics with it, it blew my fragil little mind. This what I was missing with my Maxxum 35mm. I needed a better lens. Good glass RAWKS!

That is a very good question. I like tripod's and monopod's that I am want to carry around. I have a tripod and monopod both Carbon. Gitzo and Bogen. You have to make that choice yourself. I know I need it sturdy and light. Cost extra but your camera is worth it and so is your back.
My monopod has a quick release head, really handy. My tripod has the screw in kind, I don't like that much but it works. I don't worry about my camera when it is on it and that is what is most important to me.
Go to the store look around and try them out. For me these two purchases were the hardest.
Good luck.
