I was just wondering how much money you have all spent on equipment, including camera body, lenses and accessories. I am dreaming about getting an SLR one day, but can't believe the prices of the lenses. It would help to know how much you all have spent, to give me something to work towards.
Thanks!

It just gets worse DocFrankenstein, once you get the add ons for your S1, you'll just move on to wanting something else, like a brand new camera!
And thanks for the link garethhhhh, it looks like 3000-6000 US is the norm, followed closely by 1000-3000. Well, either I have to get a better job, or I have to live like a peasant for a while. Or I can just keep dreaming......

I did up a chart for a friend recently,
it went something like this.
P&S = $500 Cost of ownership $600
8MP P&S = $1000 Cost of ownership $1200
DRebel = $1000 Cost of ownership $2500
10D = $1500 Cost of ownership $6000
1DM2 = $4500 Cost of ownership $15000
1Ds = $8000 Cost of ownership $20000
Cost of ownership included lenses likely to purchase, CF cards, Flashes, studio strobes, accessories, like remote cables, Angle Finder C, light meters, etc.. Presumes you previously had nothing.
I may be a little low on the 1Ds by the way. And I knew ahead of time I would eventually upgrade my camera so have all the lens sets, studio lights that would go with at least a 1DM2, just can't afford the camera yet, which the 1Ds is what I am saving for.
Thus the above list should tell you what you can expect to actually spend on camera stuff in the year after you purchase the camera.
Just my opinion,

I currently have lots invested in cameras, but for years I had one basic film body and two lenses, one of which was the basic 50mm f1.8 (cheap but good) and a moderate telephoto zoom. Neither were "L" or pro lenses. I took lots of great shots. It's easy to get caught in the gadget chase, but great photos are more about the photographer's vision than the equipment. Don't get me wrong -- I love good equipment. I'm buying it as fast as my wife allows. However -- and don't tell her this -- I'm not sure my images are much better.

I refuse to total this figure as it would probably just make me realize that I'm a bit out of control.

Well, so far, your 10D numbers are a little high. But give it time :D - I'm still buying, slowly but surely. Of course, I was also buying when I got the Elan II a scant year and a half ago.

Well, if you can make money doing what you would do in your spare time as a hobby anyway, why not? Maybe even help pay for some of the equipment? It's not a bad profession, either.

You're not the first to suggest that. But I'm concerned as to whether my skills are adequate for the task. If I'm going to be a pro at something, I want to be very good at it as well. I think I need a little honing yet before I'm there.

High, I thought they were low :twisted:
My total (not counting studio lights) is
10D $1500
70-200/2.8L IS $1600 +filters
100-400L IS $1000 (used) + filter
28-70/2.8L $1300
16-35/2.8L $1400 + filter
50/1.4 $300
28-135 IS $576
75-300 IS $400
2x extender $430
1.4x extender $280
25mm tube extension $124?
Hoya R72 77mm IR filter $262 58mm $44
Two 550EX speedlites $330 and $310
Angle Finder C $175
BG-ED $189
Adobe Photoshop 7.0 and CS upgrade $600 + $129?
Delkin Picture Pad and accesories $600
Or a total of $11,760 I spend because of my 10D.
This total does not count shipping and handling, nor the cost of repairing my 100-400 and 28-135, spare batteries or lighting and background sets.
This of course could technically should be split with my D60, but that is a spare camera nowand I still would have bought what I bought with just that. I count the picture pad and PS because they are necessary component of a camera of 10D or higher quality. And yes some of the prices are higher then they could have been - some where bought before finding BH.
the amount has been spend over a two year period however. All I can say is it is a good thing I make as much as I do right now on my day job. I could not afford this stuff if I was a professional photographer.

Good grief, I thought I was a gearhead. For being fresh out of college, it is amazing how much I have managed to spend in the last few months....I must have $3500+ worth of stuff, which I thought was a lot until I saw some of these other folks.
I plan to blow another $2000 or more this summer. It is time to go digital, which hurts initially, but will hopefully save me money in the long run.
It is worth the money though....I can drool over a new lens for months!

Now everyone will find me cheap...hehe I'm just in this for fun, nothing else. Spending the amount of money I have is a lot for me. But I'm having a blast with the camera!
DRebel $1337.50
Camera bag + UV fileter + 256MB CF $113
Printing - no clue. Just now and then.

Started with the DReb kit and a 70-300 IS lens in November 03. Thought I was good to go at $1500. Since the Nov 03 purchase I have picked up the 28-135 IS and 50 1.8 lens new and just ordered the 550ex flash unit. Along the way I added a $250 bag for the gear, a 4gig MicroDrive, PS CS upgrade and few other less expensive items. All told I guess I am in for about $2,750. Seems cheap compared to others but I am strictly a noobie to SLR coming from high end P&S digitals. Much happier with the results though. I fear being continually fed by this forum and the dreaded "L" factor...

Hmmmm.
We bought in the UK, December 2002 and I think the prices were a bit high compared to American prices for the D60 ... but here's what I can remember off the top of my head ...
D60 body and 28-90 standard lens £2000 or $3200 (exchange at the time)
75-300mm Canon - £300 or $480
28-90mm Sigma Macro - £450 or $720
170-500mm - £500 or $800
28-90 Quantaray Macro to use whilst Sigma was in shop $100
Bag - £80 or $128
Plus assorted CF cards 2-1GIG's, 2-512's, 1-256 - roughly £300 or $480
Forgot the tripods ... 2 tripods approx. $200
So almost $6000 worth of equipment :D
And it's just a hobby. :D
