8gb and up in a XT

Will 8gb and up memory cards work in my Rebel XT? I am going to be going on a camping trip and do not have a laptop to transfer my pictures to, will be gone for a little over a week. So I was just wondering about picking up additional cards since right now I only have (1) 1gb & (1) 2gb cards.

Instead I would buy additional 2 or even 4 gb cards. 8gb is like an accident waiting to happen, sort of putting all your eggs in one basket IMHO.

yes, XT should support 8gb. just make sure to format the CF on your computer, not the camera itself. i just picked up the 8gb extreme III also.

the argument of 'dont put all your egg in 1 basket' is getting old. CF card is reliable, but accidents can happen to anyone or anytime. a couple of years ago, the argument was used against 2GB and 4GB card. look at it today, seems like these are the standard size and everyone is using them with very little issues.

also, try to make a habit of copying your pics from your CF to your computer as soon as possible....and making backup of those.

I carry 5 cards in differing sizes, some 256mb, some 2GB. I prefer having more than one as I have had cards go sour on me before. Over a long trip there are many times it could be damaged, for example:

Static electricity---can wipe all the data
Water----can cause corrosion and shorting of circuits
Heat---can cause data loss
Shock--yup even dropping them can cause damage to circuits and casing

And the worst----dirt. Yup, get that in the pin holes and you can really bugger up the card and your camera.

So I take 5 cards, in 5 cases and have never had a problem.

Also, 1GB cards are cheap as chips these days.

I just came back from Japan, used 2 Transcend 8gb cards in my XT with no problems. They were formatted in camera.

MeNiS thanks for the link, and I do agree with you that this is not a new thing anymore and that any card you buy has the chance of failing on you. Also that good copy habits will make or break you.
mcmadkat you have brought up a good point, that dirt really is the #1 enemy of the CF cards, and it made me wonder do I want to switching out cards that often then and increase my chances of getting dirt in places it just should not be. After all I am going on a camping trip.
mishkin_360 glad to hear that you being a fellow XT user has had no problems with these 8gb CF cards.

So I think I will be taking a little of everyones advice and taking an 8gb, 4gb, 2gb, and the 1gb CF cards to round out to a total of 15gb which should be more than enough to get me through my trip. Most likely I will start the trip using the 2gb card and then move to the 4gb and use the 8gb at the end or just in case, and have the 1gb as the OMG backup if all else fails.

I don't like to put more than about 150 RAW pictures (1 hours worth) on one card ... especially doing weddings!!! So, a long time ago, a much smaller card would have fit 150 pictures on a older camera, while a 2GB would fit >1,000 with the same older camera.
