I got a couple pics of these guys a few weeks ago - I'd totally forgotten until I saw Sheldon's pic.
They were sunning on a rock about 2 feet from the edge of a pond - I wanted an eye-level picture but there was no way I was going to lie down in the muck around the pond. The shine makes it kind of tough to get a good picture of them. I even used a polarizer but it still doesn't help much.

Scott,
Try this. Go into Image | Adjustment | Shadow/Hightlight and plug these numbers in for the turtle picture and see how you like it:

Tonal Width: 22
Radius: 30
Highlights -
Amount: 33
Tonal Width: 50
Radius: 30
Adjustments -
Color Correction: +20
Midtone Contrast: +15
Black Clip: 0.01 (anything less than 1 is fine)
White Clip: 0.01 (anything less than 1)

I used your numbers, and it seems to have a *little* change... :)

Gonna have to play with that some more. I had always used a more selective shadow recovery process, but didn't know it would do the highlights like that. Very cool. Thank you.
