I've heard that the 28 - 135mm IS USM lens should have the IS turned off when using a tripod. Is this fact or fiction.

Fact.

If you leave the IS on, sometimes the lens gets confused about the fact that it is so steady, and actually starts to get a bit uppity! It's not pretty! :)

I've forgotten to turn the IS off in the past, and it's a strange thing to witness through the viefinder, as the lens invents its own motions, and does a little "dance". It's an even stranger result when you don't notice it before you trip the shutter... :O

The manual says to turn it off. I too have left it on by mistake and seen the jumpy viewfinder image but it has never affected any of my shots that I'm aware of.
