Just wondering if anyone has one yet & what you think of it.

Never tried it, but I definitely don't think it's any good. 28-300mm is almost 11x zoom, even crossing the "norma-focal-length" (50mm) by far on each side. That should make it an extremely difficult lens to manufactor, and unless it's an "L" lens with a matching price-tag, I wouldn't have bought it.. And if it WAS L-quality with that span in focal-length.. hehe, then I for sure couldn't have afforded it ;)
Further away from 50mm you walk, harder it will be to produce. The wide-side is the hardest one. When you toss inn zoom, the more zooming you add, the harder it will be (11x is incredible long). If you tend to produce a zoom-lens which is both wide-angle and telephoto (crossing 50mm in either way), then you seriously run into problems ;)
Look at the "good" tele-lenses. There's several of the 70-200's, there's a good 100-400, some good 100-300's etc. The thing in common, is that none of them got many X's zoom (longest focal / shortest focal). The exception is probably the Sigma's 50-500mm, but even though, it's still "only" 5x, and it doesn't go below 50mm, so it would surely be a lot easier to produce than this..
Long answers, but hope it makes it a little easier for you to determine if a zoom has the chance of beeing any good or not.. I think this one doesn't :/

Oh btw: remember, members on this forum is _VERY_ picky! Good lenses around here tend to be the good L's and the L-comparable from third-party manufactorers. So what might be considered "crappy" in here, very well could be of good use to people who still live with the contents of the bank-account, happily unaware of this forum ;) But I personally won't buy bad glass for my camera. I rather live broke the rest of my life ;)

Ok, I didn't do my research.. It actually was an "L", so I feel terrible stupid now =P But as I said in the first post "if it is L-quality, I can't afford it" ;) And according to http://www.dpreview.com/news/0401/04012901canon28300is.asp it'll cost nearly $2.500, so I can't.. But either way, I wouldn't expect miracles from it, because of the "insane" zoom-range it got.

If it does perform, even at $2500.00, it could replace multiple lenses.. It may just be worth it...
I'm holding my money. Hopefully it'll be what I'm looking for..

According to a Canon USA rep (on Gilbraith's forums), the 28-300L IS, originally to be released in March, will now be delayed until at least June.
I'm looking to replace my non-L 28-200 with it.

I suspect that it will be similar in quality to the 35-350L zoom, but designed with the 1.3 1D sensor in mind. A good lens for photojournalism where the photographer doesn't really know what situation they'll be in at any given time.

wow,if you're happy with a 28-200 you will LOVE the image quality of this one!
sure the older 35-350 may have been the least sharp L and this one maybe not alot better...but a bad L lens is light years in front of a cheap superzoom!!

It is meant for the PJ with a 1 series camera who really only wants one main lens. I will be a big seller to the news boys even if it isn't as sharp as a tack.
I can think of some good uses for me behind the scenes at the race circuits where I currently use two bodies and lenses for a similar flexibility (24-70 and 70-200).

I've gone to "L"
Now where's my handcart?
I thought that was pretty funny Tom. You asking "Now where's my handcart?"
We don't get off the trails so we use a dual buggy for our "L" stuff :)
3 camera bags, 2 tripods, PicturePAD-30GB to dl CF cards too, snacks, water, umbrellas etc, pushes with 1 finger!
and NO "My back is killing me" from a couple backpacks.

Hey that's neat :)
Thanks Ron!
We really like it. If we need a longer or shorter lens, it is with us :) The snacks, water and paper towels come in handy if you are shooting (in this case 6½ hours, The Butchart Gardens in Canada) a long time and don't want to pay an arm and a leg for a bottle of water (IF it is even available where you are at).

Not baby Andy. BABIES, one is about a year old (10D) and the other "baby" that Ani is partial to is about 2 years old (D60). I think, if I remember correctly, at the time, that was loaded with the D60 & an A2e because the 10D wasn't around yet. We are slowly trying to fill our stroller with baby toys :D but since we don't have much money and Ani has only worked 3 months in the last 4 years it is really slow going. :(
Best regards to you too Andy,
Ken

I have this lens and it works quite well. It is big, but not as big as you think. It is as heavy as you think. The image stabilization is very good and the pictures have been sharp. It is the right lens for what I need.

Would you mind posting a shot on the same thing on both ends of the zoom. I'm just trying to imagine what it would be like to have this lens. that way I can dream about it. :-)

I ordered the 28-300 this morning. I already received email confirmation and a tracking number from B&H, so I should have it in time for our trip to Reno and the San Francisco Bay Area.
I'm really intrigued with this lens. I sure hope it's worth the money.

Ok guys (and Gals), I have put up some pics I shot in the evening with the Canon 28-300 on a 10D body at ISO 200. It was windy and I shot everything hand held. Shutter speed is 1/30 on the first 3 shots, then 1/50 and 1/60, all are at f/16. All but the first have been reduced to 1280 pixels on the long end for posting, the first is 1024. Sorry my bad, but I'm tired and wasn't thinking, I'll fix it later when I put up a full review and better sample shots. No post processing or sharpening has been done other than conversion from RAW to JPEG. Here is the link to the shots and you can save them to your hard drive and analyze them to your hearts content. http://www.taberwest.com/review/reviews.htm I hope you enjoy.
