I'm hunting for a used 100 2.8 macro. There seems to be an older version, and a newer version. Aside from condition, is there a difference in the two?

The newer version has usm focusing, and a non-extending front element when focusing. I have the older version, not the fastest focusing, don't care about the non-extending front element. Both are sharp as a tack. Can't speak for the newer version, but mine is built like a tank.

The newer one is built similarly to other non-L lenses.

The newer one is built similarly to other non-L lenses.I would go a step higher and say it is between normal USM lenses and L lens. The build on this lens is fantastic for a nonL lens and the Optics of this lens are very comparable IMO to many L primes I have tried. It is not a L but maybe someday it will grow up to be one? I like it and the bokeh is amazing!

Easy way to tell the difference: version 1 had 52mm filters, version 2 has 58mm.

to add, this is an awesome lens. Must have in your collection.

Oh yeah, I wasn't saying it feels like the kit or the nifty! LOL! That would be pretty bad.

I don't think it quite feels as solid as the 17-55IS, but pretty close...then again I sold that lens months ago so I don't even remember anymore.

Lets just say that the build didn't make me go "uh oh...I'm gonna have problems with this in the future".

Not one bit. No worries there!

It is pretty solid. It even has that black L paint job. But anyone who likes Background blur, then this lens is a must. And it does so well as a non macro 100mm prime also.

is it worthed to buy the older version for about $150 less than the newer one?

I have been thinking about it, the older model is slightly heavier, but if the image quality is similar I might go with the older version

Image quality is similar. I have no issues with my non-usm version.

I'd go with the newer version.

I always enjoy non-extending lenses and with Ring USM for fast AF. The lens can also be used as a regular mid-range tele as well.

I'd go with the newer one. The inner focus is much better then something that sticks out, makes noise and scares insects away.

Right on, Chris, that lens is simply exceedingly nice....the build, IQ and all......a great portrait lens too, fast enough AF for normal telephoto shooting......no, it's not the 180L, but for the money !

Another reason to get the newer one is it fits instantly onto the MR14ex and MR24ex ring flashes where as the other one needs an annoying adapter.

Believe me, you get a 100mm Macro lens, you'll most likely be itching for a macro light for those cold boring nights. Which being in Wisconsin, you get. ;)

Thanks to all for the great response! It definitely sounds like a must have lens. The demand must be there as well, as used prices are not that far from new. Maybe I'll just opt for new-in-the box from B&H. :)

I have the non L type and it is great! I imagine the L lens is even better...

Lol. Well, you being in Edmonton, you might know something about that, eh? ;)

I went with the newer USM version of the lens, what can I say - it's an excellent piece of optics ! I use it for macro and portraits as well, it's very sharp and has very nice bokeh, at lease for my taste.

I added small amount of Gaussian Blur in this one ;)
