Well I failed on my first day of serious attempts to get a Red-Winged Blackbird in flight. However, I did get pics of a Great Blue Heron, coupla swans, saw a crane of some sort fly overhead and missed with the 1 shot I had time for, saw a million little birds of some sort, and generally had a very exciting time. No RWB in flight, but I did get a grackle.

I'm still not sure whether getting him in focus between the grasses was pure unadulterated luck or simply extreme skill. Musta been luck because this is a serious crop.

Great shot, Scott! I'm amazed at how you got him in focus given the cattails in front and behind him.

Did you have it on AF or did you focus manually?

Man, that's one scary looking bird.

Nice reflexes  (either that, or the bird was flying in slow motion)

I'm sure my camera would have focused on the cattails. Nice shot.

Auto Focus. Now if I had *thought* about it, I wouldn't have tried this shot or I would have switched to manual. Luckily the camera must have AF'd on some random cattail that was exactly the correct distance away. :)

Sweet Scott. I think I'd hurt myself trying to swing on a RWB or Grackle in flight

Nice capture Scottes, very cool getting him between the cattials.

....(a little work in PS, and he could be a redwinged black bird before you know it)

Wow.. I'll echo every one else... That really is something panning a flying bird with cat-tails in the foreground.. Very difficult shot..
