I couldn't resist the full moon toningt. I grabbed my 1D Mark II and Sigma 500mm f/4.5 EX APO HSM, shot at M, f/8, 1/125.

Seems like my first time to see the moon.
But is it a bit over-exposed?

I wondered when this would start. Give a guy a new camera, full moon, maybe a duck or two.
I'm surprised there aren't more Moon shots here tonight.

In my opinion, no, but each to his own. Using curves or levels I could have made it darker or lighter. I tried to reproduce what I saw, and that's how it looked. Thanks for looking and thinking about it.

That is a very difficult question to answer. My take on celestial bodies is that if you can clearly see the detail (which we can see here), then the exposure is acceptable. Its brighter than some I've seen, but I don't think its overexposed, IMHO.
If I were to go outside and look at the moon right now, I think it would be too bright to make out any of the detail shown here.

No need to send anyone to the moon, when we have shots like that. Well done, such detail. I love it!!

Yes, my comment "over-exposed" is wrong because I can see the detail. What I want to say is that I prefer a bit darker so that the details can be shown easier.

Nice! Is this a 100% crop, or a resize of the actual image?

Second thought, I did not express myself clearly in my first post.
I'm really impressed by the MKII, especially it has a greater tonal range. Too bad for my poor English and expression in my first post.

This is actually about 1/2 the original picture and resized back to 8x10. I was amazed at how much detail the 1D Mark II images retain after cropping and resizing. For posting on the web, I used PS CS, save for web, JPEG, quality=80, size = 800x640. I resharpened after resizing.
Thanks for all your comments,

That's nice, I have the same camera/lens combo as you :)
If you add a 2x TC and do a 100% crop you can get really close ;)

Hmm, well then, that explains the extra dimple I see in the newer moon picture posted above that's not in the picture that Scott took.

WOW, resurrected this one from the dead. Original post about 2-1/2 years ago. Well at least the moon is pretty much the same. And it was a good pic.

Haha I didn't even notice. Thought it was kinda weird since I didn't see the moon last night... but it was cloudy, so I couldn't say much.
