Amazing shots. I was just up at DINFOS speaking to an old friend today. Though I don't regret not being a combat photojournalist, electing to be "that guy out front" instead, I wouldn't at all mind if I could switch over to that field today. Thanks for the link. POTN member cgratti would appreciate this.

pretty cool to see 3 out of the 4 photogs mentioned coming from the AF! :)
i took a few pics last summer while in Kuwait that made the base paper, impressed my leadership, etc, but nothing of this magnitude.
do you have to be a Photographer (what is it, a 3N?) to enter the competition? or can any member with a camera enter?

Photogrpahers are 3V0X2 right now.. but in September when we become "Photojournalists"
We will be 3N0X4.. but you were close. :)
But yea sadly, you have to be in the career field which is stupid, but I guess has its ups.. as you as a photographer would know. because everyone with a PnS thinks they are a photogrpaher..the judges would be flooded. but They should make exceptions..
Yea, it was cool like the first few times I made the local Base/City paper.. but now its just like.. woo big deal. but it does look nice in my portfolio :)
Oh and the AF guy that won like 3 categories and numerous other places and honorable mentions Jeremy Lock.. I got to meet him, and from the 10 minutes talking to him he improved how I shoot 3 fold. Very good photog.

I think back and really wished I would have gone into that Army recruiter's office as I planned. I could have said, I like photography, I want to be a military photographer. Even if I had to search for a service branch that had photojournalist positions, it would have been quite the experience.

It truely is.
Sure there are the mundane parts of the job where I just hang out in the studio and shoot Head and Shoulder Portraits of critical females.. but then there are those time when im out on the flightline, in a helecoptor, in a Humvee, etc.. where its just a pure rush.
I also have the chance to go to Syracuse University (photojournalism capital) as a TDY for the AF. which means Im getting paid to attend school, that is paid for by the AF 100%.
Can't beat that.

No. You can't beat that. I guess at the time, I didn't figure out I could do my hobby every day while being in the service and it's never any of the jobs that military advertises. I'm glad you were smart enough to make the most of this opportunity. I

We will be 3N0X4.. but you were close. :)yeah i tried cross training into Photog AND PA this past fall, and was denied on both counts because of the merge- Photo wasn't taking any new applicants because the field was disappearing, and PA was about to have a major influx in manpower numbers, so they weren't even taking interviews. i told myself it was a blessing in disguise though, as photography is a great HOBBY of mine, but i wasn't 100% sure i would like it as a job, at least not in the AF, lol. (That being said i am starting to get into some small scale paid photoshoots on the side! :D )

Its good to see the miltary photographers get some love. I was an Air Force photographer for over 15 years and loved it. The only thing I didnt love was the combat camera part that led me to my decision to separate.

Yeah, this was last years contest. the server is long gone. :)
But the new one is coming up in March :)
But yeah Chris, I love my job, but how could combat camera lead you to separate.. especially at 15 years.. so close to retirement. :(
I want to do Comcam really bad, but I dont think I can be away from my family that long. But it would be a hell of an experience.
