View Full Version : Where are you located?

This is an absolutely 'unofficial' suggestion.
I've noticed that a lot of us do not enter our location when we register for this forum. It isn't required information, and some of us may have reasons for people not knowing where we're located.
On the other hand, I've found one of the great appeals of this venue to be the fact that we have members from just about every corner of the civilized world, and a few from the other parts, too. I enjoy knowing that I'm communicating with people in England, South Africa, Germany, Tennessee, Canada, Asia, and elsewhere.
If you have a reason for not publishing your location, that's okay. If you just 'missed it' when you registered, you can do it anytime by clicking on the 'profile' link at the top of the page and entering the information in the 'location' field. In fact, this is a good feature to understand for adding or changing a lot of your information including links to personal websites, signature lines, and more.
Think about it.

Now be honest Tom. This isn't some hidden agenda so that you can make fun of more Canadians is it.
I totally agree with you. It would be nice to see where everyone is from.

Tom, is "North of Boston" accurate enough? I expect that everyone knows where Boston is, right? I mean, it is the Hub Of The Universe, right?
Fo those non-Bostonians: Boston is in Massachusetts, on the east coast of the US. For some reason the city's nickname is "The Hub" and I have no idea why - well, there seems to be several stories but I believe none of them.

I think Boston overestimates its importance to the rest of the world, especially when you see the politicians that seem to proliferate there (whose last names begin with 'K' but shall otherwise remain unnamed).
'North of Boston', though technically accurate, really doesn't make much differentiation between you and Nanuk of the North (may he rest in peace). He too was 'North of Boston'. You might try for something a little more specific.
Don't worry about creating confusion, though; Don't forget that our buddy Cauck is a U.S. citizen living in England using an Avatar from a Canadian hockey team. Talk about obfuscation.....

You forgot that the Canadian team, the defunct Quebec Nordiques since summer '95 when they moved to Denver Colorado and became the Colorado Avalanche. Where I am from is near the US/Canadian border so in many ways the Canadian way of living was always there. We used to watch the double header (then Molson Hockey Night in Canada) on Sat nite all the time, or at least the first game. I saw many more Toronto Maple Leafs games then Nordiques/Avalanche games but it was all good. Living in England is great, other than the extortion rate! I am falling over backwards in several thousand years in history just about anywhere I step. Heck, there was Roman occupation in Cambridge itself in the very early AD years just after the AD/BC split and after it too. I can go on and on and on with history of over here. I have to say Hadrian's Wall was the most recent really impressive bit I saw. The bit that I saw outside Newcastle heading towards Carlisle. There was a several hundred foot drop to the ground below. Those that have seen it know what I am talking about.
However, it is interesting to know we have people literally around the world on this forum. I guess the only reason I put Cambridge, England as my location is for reference and that's all much like others have.

Tom, just curious. Just how big (or small) is the Southern California Desert? :)
Belmondo

It's a huge area. just about everything east of Los Angeles from Mexico to the San Joaquin Valley east to Arizona and Nevada is all desert. We're about 150 miles east of Los Angeles in what they call the Coachella Valley (most famous for the town of Palm Springs). We're right at sea level, and just east of here the valley sinks to below seal level.

Anyway,. as I was saying.. if you feel guarded.. list the country.. or state or even "Western Europe" "South East Asia" or some other such broad brushstroke just to give us some idea...
It is fascinating to see how international these forums are.

I live in a great old city with wonderful architecture; St. Louis, MO. The center of the US. I own a house that was built in 1887. I guess that won't impress the europeans or even the guys in Baaahhssstn but I don't think there are many structures that old in southern California.
A larger percentage of Missouri is national forest than any other state except Alaska. Maybe not the most acres total, but the highest percentage besides Alaska. Deep dark woods and fast, clear rivers. Lots of great photo opportunities.

You can find the 6 million acre forest known as the Adirondacks in New York State! Add that on to the Catskills and Taconic State Parkway area and it is impressive! I just happen to be partial to NY in general. It is truly an interesting place having from busy bustling city to forest. There is also quite a range of climates too, from milder around Long Island Sound to much drier up in the North like Massena/Potsdam/Plattsburgh area. Up there it isn't really clod till 50 or 60 below once you're used to it.
Here in England, there is the Lake District. Oh man is it awesome! I had only a few hours there to take some quick snaps. For those over here and others info, I saw Ambleside and Lake Windemere and driving around that area. I enjoyed the heck out of it. I have to get back up there. I can't explain it really well, but these villages over here are really cool. There are more that come to mind that are also in a league of their own like Lavenham in Suffolk, Burford in the Cotswolds (heck just about any town in the Cotswolds), and many many more. Again it is something to see to understand.

I've been a Leafs fan for 25 years or more. My first hero was Montreal's Guy Lafleur but then discovered Daryl Sittler and Mike Palmateer.
However, I do enjoy the Canucks very much as they are very exciting to watch (in the regular season). My wife is the most emotional Canucks hockey fan I've ever seen. It can even be embarrassing. . You can only imagine what it's like between us during a Leafs/Canucks game here.
HNIC is LaBatt now.

It has been LaBatts for some time I am gathering...5+ years. Yes Guy LaFleur, flower power, also a Nordique at one time. I only wished the Nordiques had won a cup in Quebec. Then again if they were in Quebec, there was no way they'd get Patrick Roy. This is nostagia written all over it. I have followed the Nordiques since 1984-1985 to 1994-1995 then they moved to Denver and have followed the Avs from 1995-1996 thru the present. You'd know about the old divisions too, the Prince of Wales Conf which had the Adams and Patrick Divisions; and the Campbell Conference which had the Norris and Smythe Divisions. It has been about 10 years since that was changed. I think the last year it was the old divisions was the year of the truncated season in '93-94. Stanley Cup winner that year: New York Rangers to break the 54 year curse as well as Peter Forsberg was the Calder Trophy (Rookie of the Year) winner. The Nordiques also took the Presidents Trophy and lost to the Rangers 4-2 in the first round. I can't believe it was that long ago! Just some nostalgia...

Live in Hønefoss, which directly translated to English means "Chickenfalls" Falls because we have a waterfall which "housed" 22 sawmills 200 years ago, and probably is considered the prettiest thing this friggin town got to show visitors.. Of course, unless you visit on springs while the snow is melting in the mountains, and there's plenty of water, you will not see a damend drop, as it's "consumed" by the water-based power-plant instead ;)
The "Chicken" part of the name I really have no clue of why's there..
