I've seen a couple of alternative wireless radio slave kits to the PockeWizards at porters.com and another place on the net. I am interested in using something like the PW with my Canon flashes. I realize the Canons have wireless capabilities, but I would like something that does not rely on visual IR. I have two 550EX flash units. If you have experience with NON PocketWizards what are the pros and cons?
Thanks,
Cordell

I don't know if you have already realized this, but if you use the 550's wirelessly without the STE 2 or a 550 in the hot shoe or Off The Shoe Cord 2, you will be limited to Manual flash mode and setting your flash ratios manually. In that case, you might be better off with monolights or a battery and heads.

Thanks Scott. I do know about the manual settings I'll have to use. Since it is for portrait work I'm okay with that. I like the results I get using the 550s and umbrella controlling the ratios. Mono lights are more than what I need. I appreciate your reply.

In general, Canon wireless flash works good for 10-15 meters depending on whether you are inside or outside. In general, Pocket Wizards and similar radio units are good for longer range, and that is one of the primary reasons for going to such a rig.
I would be interested to know what kind of ranges you expect to use these over if it is for portrait work.

Good question Bob. I suppose I should not have said specifically for portrait work, but more for social events in instances where the IR on the Canon's get blocked. I was thinking a PW or something similar would be better for backlighting when the IR gets blocked. Also times when it is bright outside and the IR does not work as reliable as normal. To sum it up, as a more reliable backup source.
Thanks for asking.
