Finding a Photo Story

So I have a summer of nothing to do but my part-time job, then a year of college left on my photojournalism degree.

I want to do a couple photo stories this summer, but I really don't know where to start. If you could, post your inspirations for photo stories and how you found them. I've heard of using small businesses owners as subjects, but I'd like to break the mold.

How do you find something special/significant? Do you just go to an event and make something more out of it?

Athletics/sports or any kind of performance would work. Preparation, event, then some sort of conclusion or aftermath...

Also, there are probably lots of organizations out there doing summer service projects.

And of course, road trip, hike, bike ride...

not the most exciting maybe, but those are some ideas
