Just wanted to share that i'm entering my first photo competition.

The JCDC National Visual Arts Competition & Exhibition (http://www.jcdc.org.jm/visual_arts.htm).

Here are the photos that i'll be submitting.

2 are at 13" x 19" size and the other is 11" x 14" .

Needless to say, i'm quite excited :D.

As a slight aside i've realised just how much more fulfilling it is to view my photos printed and framed as opposed to on a computer monitor.
And how ridiculous? it is to view/judge images at 700 pixel size as opposed to a print.
I feel more connected to photography viewing images this way.

Congrats on the competition and good luck. I have also found that I am much more satisfied with prints of my shots then on a monitor. They seem to have more life-like qualities. I plan on being a printing fool from here on out.:D

Thanks and I agree, seeing photos in print just seems much better.
I have a couple more that I intend to print :).

Thanks pos, but trust me I got lucky with that ship!
I have probably hundreds of other shots of the ship which just don't have anywhere near that impact.

I did an HDR of it with my old cam, a Canon Powershot A610 and i've yet been able to replicate it with my Dslr!!

They just started judging according to the schedule and they'll contact the winner within a few weeks.
The exhibition itself of the winning entries will not be until August, so i've got quite a while to go!

But thank you for all the kind words and thoughts and i'll definitely let y'all know how it goes.

I love all 3 shot, but the boat shot is great. Is it HDR?

Enter the boat/sunset and forget the other 2. Your bird is dead center of the frame - follow the rule of thirds and you have bright white areas directly behind your subject taking attention and lack of contrast away. The flower has just too shallow DOF to be a contender and the shallow DOF doesn't make the photo better than large DOF.

Why are there light areas around the ship? Did you try a "hdr" attempt lightening shadows too much?

jamdiver, If i had to wait until august it would drive nuts. pos

Great shots - and you learned from the experience. you are already a winner from that alone - but ribbons are nice.

Already entered my shots long ago Hella...
Thanks for the technical critique of the shots.

The ship is an HDR which explains the 'halo' and other artefacts.
I'm still quite pleased with it considering that I took it with my Canon Powershot A610 :).

Fancy seeing you here :).

Hmm, well according to the somewhat obtuse wording on the entry form.
I'll know by June 4 at the latest since that's when unawarded works are to be collected .

Let's see what happens, that's next week :)

Best of luck, your images are amazing. I couldn't tell you which one I like best because they all have such great qualities.

Aaack, so turns out that none of my photos placed in the competition.
Which was quite a letdown :(.

I haven't been to the gallery to see what has won, but from what I've heard some friends.
The judges seemed to prefer overly ps'ed images from what i've heard from friends..
Or shots that scream 'Jamaica'

Oh well
