^ Nice images. You shot these with a 1.6x crop?
Dude, you don't have opanda's exif viewer yet?
you can get it for just about any browser here. (http://www.opanda.com/)
I know some people can't install it at work though....
Using it you can see those were shot with a 40D.

and ekk_xt,
Great shots. Would you mind sharing what font you're using on your border? I've been looking for that for a while now and can't seem to figure out which font it is. I like it because it's 1px wide. Looks great.

^ Nice images. You shot these with a 1.6x crop? It looks full frame. Probably because of the vignetting I'm assuming you added during post.
Airfrog and roentarre, I like your recent contributions as well.
thanks lord. and yes, 1.6x crop (40D) .. i tend to add vignetting during post sometimes, i like the effect :D .. i love those shots of 35L + 5D, so since I have a crop, this would be closest to it hehe
jacobsen1 .. cant remember exactly what font it is cause i have an action that adds it automatically but when you go to those font sites, search for "pixel" fonts and something similar should come up. and thanks btw :)

I wish it were available for Apple's Safari Browser. I'm surprised Apple hasn't incorporated a utility like that right into the browser.

when i had one, it could focus in a blank wall in a dark room. very impressed. i only sold it because i didn't have the funds to keep both the 35L and the 24L. I found I liked using the 35mm more because 24mm was a little too wide. When I'm shooting that wide typically I'll use the 17-40mm instead. Great lens still though. One of my top five.

Good call dude. I really don't think you'll be disappointed. I was concerned about it, since I shoot between f/1.2-f/2.0 the vast majority of the time, but the 24 is really really sharp. In the full res file of the "End of the Road" shot, all the spiderwebs on the bottom of the sign are crisply delineated. Great color too, hardly needs PP at all.

I'm toying with ideas as to what to shave mine into when I take it off... I have a photo I have to get with mine to compare to a ~40 y/o shot of my dad with his beard when he lived in AK. Once that's done it's coming off, but I never just take it off, gotta have some fun with it.

Haha, do it! I could only keep mine for a day, 'cause I felt like too much of a crazy lumberjack molester looking type. :D It's pretty funny to have though. I'm growing the beard back now, but it's not as fierce as yours.
jacobsen1
25th of March 2008 (Tue), 09:09
yeah, it's funny because the beard is a side effect of skiing in the winter. It's the best way to keep my face warm, but at work we can't have stubble... So I either have to rock a full beard (and catch crap for the week I "grow it") or nothing. So I've let it go completely until now and it's getting insane. My bosses know it was for skiing so they keep asking "when are you going to shave that thing?" but each time they do it makes me want to keep it longer.

Just got my 24L yesterday and I'm really digging what this thing can do! The low light performance is fast and sharp and just a joy to shoot with! ;)
Here's my first portrait attempt with it, taken of a co-worker in his office with just the available light which was a couple of really horrible florescent fixtures, one on his desk and the other about 10 feet above. Shot wide open at f/1.4 1/60 sec. exposure, ISO 500
Cheers! :)

at what aperture is this lens at its sharpest? i am going to use this lens for a martial arts session and i was wondering what aperture it'd be its sharpest at.

My copy seems to be sharp from f/1.4 and up.
It really depends on how you're composing your shots, distance wise from the subject and how much of what's in the frame you want to be in focus.
I would assume with that competition you're going to, you'll be several yards away from the action and if so, you can stick with a fairly wide open setting and maintain very fast shutter speeds. If you're right at ringside, you might want to choose a smaller setting to keep more of the contestants in focus.
Experiment early on and review on the view screen at 100%. Then go from there with what works best.
Cheers!

This site;

Has a depth of field calculator near the top of the page. If you know how far you'll be from the subjects, dial in the numbers to give yourself a better idea.

he's got tons, just go through this thread page by page...
and FYI with martial arts, you're going to have more issues with parts of the subject being outside the DOF than you are with the lens not being sharp enough. Yes it's very sharp wide open, but the DOF gets pretty thin, even for a 24mm lens.
If you haven't already, play with a DOF calculator to see how deep the DOF is (or isn't as the case may be) with your working distance and what you think you'll have to shoot at.

I went out for a walk around the park today with the 24L and took a bunch of shots! Most of them were keepers too so I'm becoming more impressed the more I use it! :D
This was taken @ f/2.8 so still a bit of edge blur...a vignetting effect was also added as the sky was cloudless and a bit too plain for my tastes.
Cheers! :)

Amazing pics on your website. . .

My dream lens line up. . .
I really want to get the 35L as many reviews says that the optic is better. Well not better, it's just harder to make the 24mm (wider) as great as 35mm.
I believe I would not be able to notice it.
But, after been trying 24m and 35 mm with my kit on my crop body, 24mm on crop is simply sweet.

I think the 24L is pretty underrated, optically. I'm sure some people have gotten bad copies, but mine is only very, very slightly softer wide open than the 35L. Both are very sharp, and I'm (too) particular about sharpness. The 24 is probably a bit sharper in the center once stopped down a few. You should be in the real sweet spot of the 24 with the cropped sensor, too.
I know a lot of people "see" 50mm FOV, but personally, 35mm fits what my eyes see really well ... it just feels natural.

Me too ! That's why I'm geting the 85L instead of the 50L. I'll probably give the new Sigma 50 1.4 a try when it comes out, though (I'm glad they made it a DG and not a pointless DC).
As for the 24L, I can't wait for it to arrive. It'll be my widest lens, so it will be used in a different way to the 35L but possibly almost as often if it lives up to expectations.

oh yes me too! i don't find 50mm as how we view the world, altho technically the FOV actually is (peripheral vision outside what your eyes can focus on at any one time don't count). 35mm would be how we "want" to see the world  same reason why i picked the 24 F/1.4 over the 35 F/1.4 on my 1.3x crop cam, i.e. 31mm over 45mm. can't wait for its arrival!

yes, but of course the subject is further away (presumably focus was at the far end of the church?) so depth of field effects are less noticeable. I always forget about that.

thanks. i agree, this lens is certainly not receiving the attention it deserves. its perfect as a walkabout existing-light lens for street/indoor photography. one thing i noticed is that the raised AF/MF selector switch tend to get accidentally knocked off its default setting (unlike the recessed version on my zooms). seems like Canon didnt bother to change the switch even on new production runs (guess they're using the same 'mould' since the lens' launch).

I couldn't agree more. Talk about returning to your roots packing heat... :)

Provia 400x pushed to 1600 or neopan 1600 coupled with that lens and you have a killer low-light-ninja-stalking rig. And yes, I do want to see a picture of this haha.

I don't have any pix of the two together, but here's a shot of the aforementioned A-1 combo (click for larger/info):

What a darling of a shot!
That one made me laugh out loud. I have a new baby coming myself and I think the 35L will be my lens for the month...
