What a darling of a shot!

That one made me laugh out loud. I have a new baby coming myself and I think the 35L will be my lens for the month...

Amazing capture indeed.

thanks, but I'll admit it's a "chop":

I just got this lens today and have to say that I am very impressed with the quality of the lens so far. The focus seems to be a tad on the slow side, but over all it seems to be a great lens. It is replacing my Nikon 18-35f3.5 in my bag.

Here is one of my first shots

After comparing the 16-35 II and the 24L for a while now, the AF speed of the 24L is the main reason Canon should make a mark II version. It is clearly outdone by the zoom and feels sluggish in comparison. It is no slouch but compared to other newer designs, the AF needs an update.

incredible composition and lighting. this wasn't just ambient light, was it? nonetheless, here's my contribution. it's the full shot in one of those situations where the finished product was a crop (mostly just taking the black space out but some reason, made the file size larger even when there was no other change (not even in file type). oh well, just another one of those mysteries of life.

Hoff these are magnificent!

Do you get into any scrapes with the street photography? I just would'nt have to courage

I have a habit now that if I raise the camera to my chest to shoot, I get a stupid grin on my face. It is hard to be mad at someone who is smiling like an idiot at you. Then I sort of act like a tourist and keep walking.

I rarely talk to people but the other day I did have someone walk by as I was stationary on a corner, shooting. He came back 20 seconds later and said I should delete his picture. Normally I'll just do it on the spot and recover it later from the card. It is good to stand up for your rights to photograph in public but you also have to judge the possible safety issues of each situation (depending on the neighborhood I'm in and the size of the subject!)

Thanks! :) I figured it would be a great standard prime on my 40D and a good wide angle on my EOS3 for gaining unique perspectives (I'll have the 50 f1/.4 for a more standard field of view). I look forward to contributing!

I'm a moron. I was testing the lens wondering why everything was coming out so poorly exposed. Turns out I was on SPOT METERING in broad daylight, which was causing everything to be either pitch black or blown out. Back to the testing board!!

Okay dudies, shot a little around the backyard (not good lighting here....) and in the kitchen. SHARP lens! I didn't have to sharpen many of the photos (except the full faced self portrait because I focused on my nose, naturally ). Love it so far. The bokeh is to die for.

Yup! I should have kept my ISO a bit lower, but I'm still learning the ropes of the lens. I keep forgetting the wider angle gives a little more forgiveness at slower shutter speeds. I shot a film photo project shortly before those pics were taken (Starbucks satire) and had to keep remembering that 1/50 would be alright for such a wide angle on a film body.

I love what the 24L / 35L do at dusk when you get down to f/ 1.4/1.6/1.8 at that time of evening. The colors are gorgeous when you can keep the ISO down around dusk.

Precisely why I want one. If I can't find a used 24L I may have to take you up on your 35L. :) either way, I'm stuck waiting on a buyer for my 17-55!

stimulants are a photographer's greatest downfall.

the worst are the smokers who love to drink coffee; the only problem with getting rid of these stimulant fiends is that they somehow manage some of the most creative compositions as to avoid these shakes (and probably due to the stimulated mind).

i take in zero stimulants (not even soda) and still have shakes, so be thankful. a damaged central nervous system can reek havoc on your shooting confidence.

i can say that much.

Hm, I think my 24L is needing a trip to canon straight out of the box. It appears to be front focusing when shooting at larger apertures after a day of shooting with it (proper focus points selected and everything like that).Sending in my 40D as well because that doesn't appear to be working, either (it's spazzing out with menu displays and flickering). Luckily, I'm going on a trip this weekend so the wait won't be too painful. ;)

and of course I PP my images. You'd be a fool not to. If I don't it's only for lens tests to see how lenses might compare w/o any sharpening, but everything I put online or print has it's own PP done to it.

Okay gang, I just got back from Canon Irvine (I live exactly 10 miles away). My lens was indeed front focusing significantly and my 40D had some sort of problem that could have been contributing to the weird images I was getting, so hopefully everything comes back in working order!

IMO, a properly calibrated (or adjusted via Micro Adjustment in the Camera) 24L is just as good as the 35L.

Mine is tack sharp wide open.

Soft is the last word I would use to desribe this lens wide open...and of course it gets better stopped down.

This lens is a winner!

Hoff,

Hey...you got something against cats?
OK, ok...I admit, your baby is much cuter that this particular cat.

Great shot and congrats!!!

What I like about the 24L is the fact that the 24mm affords me to use slower shutter speeds, and that's a great thing indoors.

It really is sort of an ulitmate low light lens.

Is there an artisic reason for buying this lens or is it purely a light gathering reason?
A 2 stop advantage is a big reason to have it, but I don't really see a 2 stop advantage of DOF in the imagry on show. I ask because a lot of what i've seen could easily have been shot with a 24-70/2.8 or a 16-35/2.8. It's not the photography i'm questioning, a lot of it is very strong here, i'm just curious about it's use and application.

nicksan

Speaking strictly for myself, I like wide and fast primes like the 24L and 35L precisely because of it's "light gathering abilities" as you eluded to. Makes shooting indoors heck of a lot easier. All I really need is around 1/40 or so to handhold the 24L.

It also helps that they seem to have that so-called "L" pop to them when things are done right...perhaps more to do with the fact that you need to get closer to the subject to fill the frame...

I also like the ability to get closer to the subject giving me another creative option. (I believe the 24L has something like 9"-10" MFD if I recall correctly).

As for DOF, and bokeh quality...well...I've got the 50L and 85L for that.;)

Is there an artisic reason for buying this lens or is it purely a light gathering reason?

Low-light. I don't give a hoot about the 'bokeh'. You can only limit the DOF so much at 24mm; that photo of mine above is just at the MFD.

The max aperture of the lens allowed me to shoot that at ISO 400 instead of the ISO 1600 I'd have to be at with my 16-35 II. BIG difference there, right?

Hmm, I've just thought of another good and valid reason to use this lens over say a 24-70/2.8L....size and weight. The 24-70L really extends to quite a size at the 24mm end (odd that) and looks kind of massive compared to a sweet little 24L. It's just a pity that it's not weather sealed.

TheGreatDivorce

2 stops of DOF is plenty noticeable, even at 24mm. Obviously it just depends on subject distance, too.

I got it for light gathering, and the effect of a shallower DOF with a wide angle FOV.

well, at just 24mm this isn't that much smaller if you're carrying other primes as well. The 28mm 1.8, 50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.8 do add up to around the same weight and price as a 24-70L though. ;)

The 24-70L really extends to quite a size at the 24mm end (odd that).

odd, yes, but it's also brilliant IMHO. That lets them design a hood that actually works at 24mm and 70mm. ;)

Love it. I don't think any of my lenses have ever blown me away like this one does. Colors are clear and vibrant, the AF is great but MAN, that bokeh!! Insane! And 24mm F/1.4 means hand holding in very little light without flash. That last shot was at ISO 800. Just found my new favorite toy for bokeh and bad light.

me too, since i have this lens i want a 5D even more! It's shines so much more on a 5D i think (based on the pictures in this topic).
Can't make up my mind to keep the 40d or not, because i don't shoot sports and because of the lovely 17-55 i have for it

I've been obsessing over the 5D mk I as well, but the AF is a deal breaker for me. All points are too centered and it's general performance (the AF, not the cam) is just not good enough for me. The 1D series are really too big and bulky for my taste so I guess I'll keep shooting my 40D. Lovely, more money for glass :D

Edit: And yes, I've used both the 5D and the 1D mk III IRL, not just read about them :)

Yes i know what you mean, but when you really love that '5D look' of photos it's hard to ignore that cam and carry on shooting with the 40D (at least in my case)

That "5D + L prime" look keeps grabbing my attention, but the AF shortcomings are deal breakers for me. Ah well, nothing a bank robbery and a 1Ds mk III won't fix. :D
