Ah well, nothing a bank robbery and a 1Ds mk III won't fix. :D
Actually a 1Ds MKIII won't fix it--the AF points are still very much centered. It's pretty much that way on all FF cameras.

And I know what you mean! :D
That "5D + L prime" look keeps grabbing my attention, but the AF shortcomings are deal breakers for me. Ah well, nothing a bank robbery and a 1Ds mk III won't fix. :D
AF shortcomings like the 24L is soft are WAY OVER RATED. I never miss shots because of focus problems with the 5D. Use it enough to learn how to use it properly and you won't have any problems. The 85L focuses way to slow too ;):lol:.
Don't believe everything you read on forums. Most that make charges don't have the equipment they are complaining about or haven't taken the time to get use to the equipment.

I've posted about the AF speed on the 24L before and while I've said it could be improved, I agree with the above -- it is perfectly usable and you'd never think that it was slower until you compare it to the 16-35 II.

The 85L focuses way too slow when you are going from one extreme to the other but for portraiture which I think it was developed for, I really don't notice it that much, (okay it's not that fast if you're doing night street shooting) what I do notice is that it's very touchy trying to get precise focus using one of the outer focus squares on a 5D when shooting 1.2 because there's only something like 8 tenths of an inch depth of field. You get it right and it works, the whole face looks good if that eye is crisp.
A fantastic lens, but the hardest one I own to work with.
I've actually been kind of thinking of getting one of the first generation 24L's when they start getting traded in and picking one up used at a good price. Everything I've seen from them is really good.

I've used the 5D, not just read about it :)
I prefer the AF on my 40D by far. Used the 24L with it in extremely poor light last weekend:

I absolutely LOVE being able to shoot in dim light without flash. I was shooting ISO 1000 -> 1600 to get 1/50 at F/1.4 to F/2.0. AF was spot on every time - and fast! I love the 5D look, as stated previously, but I am far too AF-dependant to ever use it as my primary camera body. If only the D700 was built with an EF mount, the choice would be easy. But there is no way in HELL I'll ever abandon my Canon primes!

i came across a deal i couldn't pass up for a 24mm 1.4 a couple weeks ago but my Tammy 17-50 seems to out shine the 24 in sharpness. i know i didn't buy the 24 to shoot at above f5 but i shoot alot of glamor type stuff and i want to be able to use the 24 in low light situations with at least being able to keep most of the model in focus and rather sharp with out stopping up to much.... so i'm trying to quickin my learning curve.
so any suggestions or experiences are welcome... my main goal is to try and stay around 1/160 f2-f4 with out the bokeh taken over to much

Definitely something off about your 24 then. Stopped down to f/2.8 is stopping down a significant amount, especially for a prime like the 24 or even 50 1.4m, 85 1.8.
As far as your shooting, you can do some creative shots, but it definitely has its limitation as its a wide lens, so you have to do a lot of full body shots. A few up close you can do, if you do it right, but you definitely want to use another lens with it if you do a full shoot.

I've had the 17-50 and it is a gem. But your 24 should definitely blow it away when it comes to sharpness, contrast, colors and bokeh.

A few up close you can do, if you do it right, but you definitely want to use another lens with it if you do a full shoot.
thanx for the input.... i'm going to look into getting the 24mm serviced
I've had the 17-50 and it is a gem. But your 24 should definitely blow it away when it comes to sharpness, contrast, colors and bokeh.

nice work... i never even consider using my Tammy below F5 i guess thats why i get such good results with it and why i wanted another lens for low light shooting... i'll look into getting the 24mm serviced cuz i expected a lot more from it but i really need to give it a a full go thats why i wanted to get feedback to make sure it wasn't user error

Good.
As far as two lens, on a crop camera, a 24 (properly working) + 50 would be a good set for a shoot with some lights. I just got my 24, but now that I think about it, I think I might do that for my next indoor shoot. :)

Personally, I don't agree. I think that for a 24 it is very, very good, even in this picture with difficult subjects in the background. Increase in DoF is all relative, I think it is also about rendering, and IMO, the rendering of the 24L is better than that of the 35L, more like 50L and 85L in quality. The 35L somehow looks different to me.
But that is my opinion of course :D.

Actually I'd say it's the other way around, the 24L has is own look where as the 35L, 50L, 85L and 135L have a common look to them when used wide open. The 24IIL seems to address this somewhat. A 24mm is never going to have a thin DOF due to it's focal length. What this lens offers is a 2 stop advantage over a 24-70/2.8L but I can seen no real creative dirve for this lens.
What doesn't help this particular shot is that it was taken at f2 and not f1.4.

This is totally not true. The 35, 50 , 85 and 135 look soooo different used wide open. I've owned and used all 4 extensively (still own 3, the 35 is gone), and I also had a 24 1.4 m1 (my mk2 should be here any day, now :) ). The 24 is also a different beast, and I suggest you shoot the 24 wide open at MFD before talking about thin DOF. Also I suggest you revisit basic DOF notions, as FL is only one of it's 3 critical determining factors, the other two being aperture ( f stop ) and focusing distance.

>Sigh< Please accept that some people's observations when using this lens are different to thers. Personally, I don't like the look of the 24L, especially for portraiture. Sure up real close with small objects it gets quite funky. If I wanted to shoot macro, it wouldn't be me lens of choice for commercial work either. For every thing else, It does produce different results to the other primes when shot wide open. If you get a simular look, then good for you bud. But Please don't patronise me...I know about DOF....there is a world of difference between real world use and looking at charts. I have also used 24L and a 35L. I also shot enough weddings last year with a 50/1.4, 16-35IIL, 24-70/2.8, 85IIL and a 135L to know what they produce. The 24L (for what I shoot) has little benefit over a 16-35IIL or a 24-70L. If anything, I'd say that the 24-70L carries the same trademark soft vignette, corner softness, colour repoduction, and micro contrast than make the 135L and 85L images look so sweet. I don't see any of that trade mark with the 24L images.
How about providing some images of your own to justify your statements? Show me a few pics where the 24L produces better bokeh and look to a simular 35L shot?

which part of my thread are you reacting to? My comment about some of the minor simularities or that I dared to relate a zoom to a prime? DOF and sharpness, they are poles apart. But there's more to a lens' optical charector than just it's sharpness.

Relax man, it's just a discussion.
You stated that you feel the 24L lacks characteristics found in lenses like the 35L, et al. I'm just saying that after owning both a 24L and 35L for about a year and using them quite a bit, I found their characteristics to be more similar to each other than dissimilar. I'm just stating my experience. And I personally don't see how a zoom with fickle IQ that is 2 stops slower is similar to any of the lenses you mentioned. But that's just my opinion.

okokokok.....I'm relaxing man....chillin....coollin....and.....relax ;-)
I did say the same....the prime is 2 stop faster....I wasn's saying A = B, but we were commenting on the treatment that this lens offers, not it's DOF or sharpness. The discussion was about a "look" that a lens imparts to a particular image but now it's spiralled into a more genrealised comparision. Because this lens is so wide that at say 1.5m, there's not a lot to the DOF that thrills me, compared to a simularly framed image taken fro a little bit further back with a 35L. Sure if I need a 24mm with the slimmest DOF possible then this is the lens that I'd use. But at 24mm, with every thing being equal, there's quite a lot of DOF compared to other lenses.
This lens has a lot of strong points, it's now the 2nd finest 24mm ever made (the MKII steals it's crown by a smidgen). It's a small and bright little wonder that has it's own look and view on the world. Which in it's own regards is a great thing.
I wasn't saying that I hate the 24L, it's actually a lens that I like to see results from. I have no shooting requirements fro this lens but sorta wished I did.
To say a 24-70L has fickle sharpness would indicate that yours is a little softer than mine or that you have a very extream view on sharpness (which I can undersand). Mine is very sharp wide open, more so at the wider end.

What doesn't help this particular shot is that it was taken at f2 and not f1.4.
What I am really trying to say, is that
a) creative drive depends on the individual photographer, not the lens, so saying that a 24 F/1.4 has no real creative drive over a 24-70 is a non-starter. I could say the same about the 24-70, if I wanted to, but that would only be valid for me, not necessarily for someone else. I have tried a 24-70 for a week or so, and I just didn't like it, for a variety of reasons. I do like the 24L.
b) IMO (note that IMO), the 24L is closer in rendition to the 50L and 85L (II) than the 35L, to me it actually is very similar, and I'll stick to that with regard to my own most common shooting cicumstances for the 24L, 50L and 85L II, i.e., low light. The rendition of high iso low light shots, when corrected for white balance, is very similar to the 50L and 85L II, and the 35L is different, or takes a lot of work to get the same. That is my experience. Yes, I did shoot with a 35L.
c) Whether at F/2 or F/1.4 is not what matters. Have another look at the way OOF is rendered. It is amazing for a 24 mm lens. Yes, obviously DoF will be more than with a longer lens, but bokeh is about the OOF background and foreground, not about the sharp bits. Canon makes at least two 24s with very good bokeh, and the 24L is one of them, the TS-E 24L is another. Oh wait, there are 3 now. There also is the 24L II :D. Try the 24L in difficult circumstances, and you'll be amazed at how good the bokeh is.
d) Your personal experience is not necessarily the absolute truth, but to me that is how you seem to put it. I think everybody works diferently, and may well get different results. They are all valid, IMO.
Kind regards, Wim

I'm just stating my opinion about the 24L and i seem to have upset you guys. This triade started because i dared to say that the 24L had a look "all of it's own".
Yeah Genodm, lift a line out of context..."for Portraits...I don't care for it's look much" which is very different to the portion of my post that you quoted.
I'm happy to leave this thread, I'm here because I like to keep tabs on your pictures...but if this is a thread that's getting all tribal because I dared to say that for environmental portraiture I prefer a 35L or that the 24L exhibits a harsher Bokeh and less flattering DOF compared to a 35L then yes...may i will leave this thread.
if the latter is true then this thread has become the home of forum trolls, instead of a fantastic bunch of guys showing their experiences and work.
Wow. Thanks. It looks like we all are a bunch of trolls now.
As I stated in my other post, and let me state it more bluntly this time, as you managed to really upset me now, which generally takes quite some doing:
You state your preferences as if it is the absolute truth, thereby just dismissing other people's opinions and experiences, and hence implying you have no respect for anyone who hasn't got the same opinion as yours.
This is why people react vehemently, wouldn't you? That is all there is to it.
Regards, Wim

Personally, I don't like the look of the 24L, especially for portraiture.
Yeah Genodm, lift a line out of context..."for Portraits...I don't care for it's look much" which is very different to the portion of my post that you quoted.
Re-read what you actually typed. To me you say you don't like the look of the 24L, ESPECIALLY for portraiture. I understood that to mean you didn't like the look much for anything else either. I guess I misunderstood you.

I wasn't offended, but upset. I had calmed down already - saying what's on my chest normally helps, but this post by you, and thank you for that, makes me feel good again.
So yes: hugs. :D <- big smile is back

Thanks bud...I've just re-read what I wrote and it really came out of my head to the keyboard wrong. I'd probably jump at half of what I wrote if I read it in another forum.

Pardon my ignorance but what's "roll off"?

...Canon makes at least two 24s with very good bokeh, and the 24L is one of them, the TS-E 24L is another. Oh wait, there are 3 now. There also is the 24L II :D.
If the TS-E24mm II is all it's cracked up to be, there may be 4 24's with good bokeh. :)

It's not ignorance, just a hardly used non-scientific portrait term for DOF on a portrait subject's face. It's not a scale that's measurable but a term of how it looks. Both the 35L and 85L have a roll off that just looks so sweet. Naturally, the 35L needs to be a lot closer to get a simular effect / look. A 135L doesn't have great roll off, but it's still a great portrait lens. The 85L's roll off is just so attractive and it's one of the things that gives it's a certain look.
I picked up the term whilst having a drink with a few London based fashion photographers that were talking about their current work and favorite portrait lenses.

I am sure it will be :D. I'd expect nothing else from Canon, considering what they have done with their latest Ls.
I really want one, but the 5D II comes first :D.

The 200 2L is even one step up from the 85 in that dept in my opinion.

Nice! Come to think of it, it was December of 2006, not 2007! Wow, how time just flies!
I remember Marbella/Estepona not looking much different than southern California. I mean.. other than the Puerto Banus and its fancy yachts. :D Ah... memories.

I have not evaluated the version II, but I recently traveled with the 24 (and a 50) as my only lenses. I am very pleased with this lens and always have been. 1Ds M III, f/1.4, ISO 400
