Hi Jelle,
If it is very cheap, and it looks ok, the choice can't be all that hard, no? You could always sell it at a profit and still get a 35L ... :D

Yeah, that's my favorite as well.
It was around 6:30pm or so and the sun was beginning to go down in earnest.
I thought the way the rays were passing through that area was an interesting scene, especially with that one isolated branch with blossoms just hanging down below the rest of the tree...
I also wanted to catch some flares on purpose and managed to do that.
I love it when a plan comes together...(wasn't that the A-team's motto? :-))

Geno, I have a tough time shooting street at such FL's....I've seen enough of your work to know that, if in fact you're shooting street with it, it's working out quite well.
I prefer the longer FL's for street. Can't quite ever get what I'm looking for under 85mm's.

Anyone here use it on a 1.6x crop? I'm thinking of renting it for my 30D for a trip im taking...
Idea is to use it indoors when i need more speed than my 28-75, and also for some portraits of a friend of mine...
Since i can only rent one lens to supplement what i have and i know i want a fast prime i was thinking of the 24 f/1.4L because despite being a 24mm lens it should have excellent subject isolation because of the 1.4 aperture...

I'm actually considering selling my VERY good copy of the 24-70L for this lens.
I had a chance to try the 24L last year. I love how you are able to get nice isolating DOF even at such a wide angle!

Hey wow, that seems pretty darn close. Are those ice crystals?
I really would like the MkII version of this lens, but I used the MkI version before and loved it. The MkII would cost about $1000 cdn more (double the price) compared the a used MkI and I often wonder if it's worth it.

Yeah, the shots are off morning frost here in Canberra. A new feature that this lens gives me is the ability to get really close while having a relatively wider field of view.
I bought my lens new just a few weeks ago. It was AU$750 cheaper than MkII grey imports and about AU$250 more expensive that typical near-new used lenses on e-bay.
I bought my lens for mainly environmental portraits and low-light wide shots. Given the reviews and sample shots, I decided MkI would be sufficient.

Thank you, and yes it is. There are a few more around here as well, but this one is probably my favorite on in the immediate area. It's located outside Comer, GA (Watson Mill Bridge). Beautiful place.
Did they also use this bridge in a movie (forget the name of the movie) for a participle scene?! Really weird bridges, you only see them in the USA, I think.
A little more ontopic. How is the border quality of this lens?! I`m asking this because the review from Photozone isn`t quite as good as you aspect it to should be for an L lens http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/152-canon-ef-24mm-f14-usm-l-test-report--review.
Thanks!

This lens is a WA, bordering on UW, and it is the fastest 24 mm around. IOW, it is bound to have slightly softer corners than the centre is. It also used to be the world class leader in its class (+/- 25 mm lenses for FF and APS-C), and I only say used to be, because now we have the 24L II, which is slightly better again.
The question really is, what do you find acceptable, for real life use, and will you notice these slightly softer corners? If you shoot buildings head on, I guess you will if you don't stop down to F/4 or F/5.6. But that's fine IMO. If you use the lens at or close to its maximum aperture, you will likely use it for low light shooting. Will you notice any slightly softer corners in that case? No, not IME. You could use this lens for street photography. Would you notice the slightly softer corners in that case? No, you won't. Landscapes? No you won't, because you stop down. WA effect shots? Neither. Etc.
This lens is better than any of the zooms covering 24 mm available (16-35, 16-35 II, 17-40, 20-35, 24-70, 24-105, 17-55, 18-55 - all incarnations, 17-85) at 24 mm, not only for sharpness, but also for speed: it is 2 stops faster, at least, than anything else in Canon land.
And apart from that, it renders very, very beautifully, great contrast, colour and bokeh (especially for a WA!) straight out of the box, so to speak. It is in the same league as the 50L and 85L when it comes to that.
Do I like it? Yes, you betcha. And I know I am not the only one. People who have one, or the Mk II, generally don't let this lens go.
Kind regards, Wim

Thanks for your answer, maar je had ook in het Nederlands mogen antwoorden. Geintje natuurlijk ;) , aangezien `t een internationaal forum is!
I properly use it most for walk-allround (my 28-70 is sometimes a little bit to tight on crop and has a focusing distance of 0,5 meter) and a lot of indoor shots at party`s and stuff. I also like the large aperture!

I always liked it a lot on APS-C as a short standard lens, for the same types of shots you want to use it for. That si actually what I got it for originally.
BTW, you don't have any corner softness worries at all on APS-C, to be very honest.
Kind regards, Wim ;)

I was looking at purchasing this lens and found this thread via google. This picture was so vibrant I had to register to ask the question:
How in the world did you get the sky to look like that? I understand if you lower the exposure the sky becomes more blue but how did you manage to get the rest of the area to not appear so dark? Did you use a filter here? How much post work did you do?
I am very impressed by this shot.

I love to do (low light) street work (people, buildings, indoor shots at restaurants and stuff like that). My 28-70L is sometimes too much in the way (big and bulky), if you know what I mean.
I just want to have 1 walk-allround, fast prime and I thought my Sigma 30 F/1.4 will do the job, but I find it to soft wide open and my example has a crappy focusmotor, which I now really hate! I also love to go a little bit more wider!
I think `m going to order a new 24L F/1.4 Mk1. You can get one for about €950,-, that`s a pretty nice price I think!

I have a query to all you 24L owners out there. I just purchased this lens second hand but there is a funny thing going on in the AF-machinery. It makes a really high-pitched noise when focusing. Manual focusing it is quiet. Took the lens to a local dealer today and he basically laughed at me and said he had never seen this before. Anyone encountered the same problem? Anything I can do about this?
I guess it doesn`t matter much - just annoying.

The first tests with the lens look good though, AF seems to be spot on. It`s just the noise. Sounds like it needs some oil or something. Guess sending in a lens for an oil shift is more unusual than doing it with my volvo...

I really like the 3D effect. The bell is mounted right to the wall and isn't more than 4 inches from the rusty bolt in the middle to the wall behind.
