Hey all, I just got this great lens!!!
Actually I bought a used 24L from the sell section this monday, but can you believe it, when I got home yesterday, my parents bought the same lens for me as a gift!!! It's brand new!!!
Now I need to sell the former used one, although it is still in shipping...

This lens is a WA, bordering on UW, and it is the fastest 24 mm around. IOW, it is bound to have slightly softer corners than the centre is. It also used to be the world class leader in its class (+/- 25 mm lenses for FF and APS-C), and I only say used to be, because now we have the 24L II, which is slightly better again.
The question really is, what do you find acceptable, for real life use, and will you notice these slightly softer corners? If you shoot buildings head on, I guess you will if you don't stop down to F/4 or F/5.6. But that's fine IMO. If you use the lens at or close to its maximum aperture, you will likely use it for low light shooting. Will you notice any slightly softer corners in that case? No, not IME. You could use this lens for street photography. Would you notice the slightly softer corners in that case? No, you won't. Landscapes? No you won't, because you stop down. WA effect shots? Neither. Etc.
This lens is better than any of the zooms covering 24 mm available (16-35, 16-35 II, 17-40, 20-35, 24-70, 24-105, 17-55, 18-55 - all incarnations, 17-85) at 24 mm, not only for sharpness, but also for speed: it is 2 stops faster, at least, than anything else in Canon land.
And apart from that, it renders very, very beautifully, great contrast, colour and bokeh (especially for a WA!) straight out of the box, so to speak. It is in the same league as the 50L and 85L when it comes to that.
Do I like it? Yes, you betcha. And I know I am not the only one. People who have one, or the Mk II, generally don't let this lens go.
Kind regards, Wim
Wim. This post is what finally sold me on purchasing a 24L. Good no nonsense look at the 24L.

Torn between this and the 35L! Any thoughts?
Beyond the obvious focal length difference, there's also a difference in the sharpness with the 24L being a bit better which makes it more suited for general purpose type shooting. I use mine for landscape, product photography, indoor portraits of larger groups of people and for interior and exterior architectural shooting. I had the 35L as well up until a few weeks ago and ending up selling it because it got very little use as I don't do a lot of portrait work and for when I do, I have a 50L and 85L for those type of activities. For me, the 35mm focal length just didn't fit my shooting styles. For many others, they'll rant and rave about the 35L until the cows come home. In the end, it always comes down to knowing what you mostly shoot and picking the most suitable lenses for your specific needs.
Here's a recent product shot done with the 24L from me...

I've been shooting far more with my 14L and TS-E17 for a lot of landscape/architectural shooting so as a result, the 24L has been infrequently used as of late. But I agree, there seems to be little need need to upgrade to the Mk II version, especially considering the price jump.

With the 24L II? That's very hard to do. Ideally you need a 85 F/1.8 for that :D.
CA is slightly easier, but even that is very hard. Much easier with some of the longer fast lenses.

No, I'm not feeling inadequate about my work as I receive many favorable reviews of my pictures that I post here and my clients are always pleased with my work. That's not what any of this is about.
My entire point was to try and promote non-divisive image feedback like the kind you just offered up to jacobsen1, so I guess you got it after all.

testing the XRite Color Checker Passport today. What a great tool for color calibration! The 5D mark II proved to produce flatter images with a warm auto WB compared to the 7D which was really close to SOOC after proper color calibration.

Note the greens and blues in the post production. They are more vibrant compared to SOOC.

I love this lens! it's so much fun to shoot with whenever i take my girlfriend out on dates. I find the 35L to be too long and the 24L to be too wide. Unfortunately there is no 28L but I would really think that that would be the perfect FL for me.
After thorough testing of my copy of the 24L mark I, i deem this copy to be amazingly good!

The only thing that could make it cooler is a bit of space around the couple. That said, I understand that this was probably the best of 10 similar shots and the passersby were not cooperative.

My thoughts as well. I do have 1 or 2 where there is a lot more space around the b&g but the 'more' crowd around them fills the photo more. I might have to merge 2 pictures together to get what I really wanted.

1. Initial reaction: didn't see the couple in the photo. They didn't pop out really.
2. Space would be great as someone mentioned. A longer shutter speed of say 5 seconds would help blur the general public further.

What other lenses do you use?
I've got the following lenses to pick from: 24L mark I, 35L, 45 TS-E, 50 1.4, 85L II, 135L and a 24-70L.
For engagements, i usually just grab three lenses and they vary depending on what i want to achieve on that day...
Usually, it'd have to be the 35L, 45mm TS-E and the 135L. I don't like depending on the 50mm f1.4 because sometimes it misses AF.
the 35L fights with the 24L and the 85L fights with the 135L for their space in my three lens limit bag. I'm limited by my bag really. LOL.
Other things i bring to my shoots include the X-rite passport, an L358, and a 72mm ND-8 filter as well as a 77mm UV (if i bring the 24L mark I).
the lens that sees the least amount of use is the 24-70L. 2.8 is Sloooooooooooowwwww. my grandma could run faster than 2.8.

I got mine for cheap (850) and all that I can tell you is that for half the price, you really can't tell between the 24L II and the 24L in terms of post processed samples shots.

in reply to the blue snow, ThomasW is right in that the street lamp cast an orange tint to the image and i adjusted the wb to correct this. I used a burst of fill flash to light up the falling snow & this ended up blue following the wb adjustment. Its odd but i quite liked the effect.

Undecided on what to do. I may be selling my 135L, a guy has messaged me about it and is willing to fork over the cash. It's going to hurt but I will do it if it means new glass. I have REALLY been wanting a wide prime and a 24L looks like it would fit the bill. I really want something for low light indoor candid portraits and general "fun" portraits. It's between this and the 35L and I think the 35L is too close to the 50L in focal length. Any suggestions or advice?

So, I traded my 35L for the 24L.....I had heard the 24L wasn't as good....I heard wrong...I really prefer 24mm over 35mm on my 7D....Not shooting FF currently, so I have no opinion on that....Anyways, Seems sharp, contrasty and the AF is as fast as the 35L (I think, or it's close anyways).
Sorry, just some random test shots at 1.4
