If I end up loving this FL as much as I did the 35mm, that's probably the end result, although, my current 24L is pretty much perfect.

Thanks Tim, the light was popping in and out of the clouds. I just happen to be in the right place at the right time. It poured just a couple of minutes after that was taken. In fact just a fraction of a second after I made this exposure the clouds killed the light on the church.

I sold my Sigma 30 1.4 and decided I wanted a fast prime. I was looking at the 35L but then someone told me about their 24L, so I decided to check it out. I found a remarkable copy for $900 and wow! What a good deal! I gladly lose the 6mm from the 30mm then gain 5mm over my Sigma's 30mm.

These are a couple of shots, just messing around with the lens.

^ - thanks for the reply - I just scored a pristine looking copy of the 24L mkI over on FM and I can't wait to try it out.

I'm using the tiny 35 f/2 at this point which I really like on 1.6X crop and FF, but the 35L is tempting. ;)

I've shot 1.6X crop and FF for years, but for some reason I keep drifting back to crop for some reason (guess I'm bucking the trend). Just picked up a 550d and I'm really liking the little guy.

thatkatmat
27th of July 2011 (Wed), 01:58
I've done the same over the years...Have 2-1.6 crops now....But, starting to miss FF again...Think I'll keep my trusty old 20D and sell my 7d to fund a FF body....I really like the 24L, many will say if you like the 24LmkI the mkII will be even better, but I happen to think the 24LmkI is fantastic and would rather put the extra $600 into something else...I shot a 550D and 60D with my buddy in China last week, both were impressive to me...

I am more of a telephoto guy, and I've an 24/1.4 that I take out rarely. Over the last few weekends I gave it a couple of run-outs so that I am slightly more familiar with it. I was using a 1DmkII so it is closer to a 35mm. I'm still not comfortable with it but I'm at least marginally happy with these of the kids:

#1. Window-lit portrait
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7191/6827060482_c4b8c62bd5_b.jpg
This was a fairly ordinary colour shot (although my wife likes it), so I made a B&W copy in Silver Efex 2 and blended it with the original for a little extra contrast and much heavier light fall-off.

#2 In the mews
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7196/6826676732_b22cf0352d_b.jpg
Another one with quite a bit of processing in Color Efex 4 this time.

#3 In the mirror
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7180/6827019568_4d49a240dd_b.jpg
B&W in Silver Efex Pro 2. Reflected in the (dirty) granite pillars outside Euston station in London.

There are some superb shots in this thread. And now that I just joined the owners club for this lens, I thought I would post some shot from my first outing with it.

I went to the Excalibur Estate, an English prefab estate built in 1945 and 1946 by POW's which is unfortunately in the process of being redeveloped (http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2011/jan/02/postwar-prefab-houses-demolition-london). Parts of the estate have been condemned already. In other parts, residents are still fighting to stay in their homes and waiting to hear about their fate.

Condemned (Nr 19)

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7038/6835536642_3d20e57f8b_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/cameraobscuraphotography/6835536642/)

As I was shooting that sign, the owner of the prefab came out to ask me whether I was with the local council. I wouldn't have been well received if I had been...

Chumlee, I did have to correct some CA on the 3rd shot, which was shot wide open. But it wasn't an issue at all on the other shots.

Thanks.

I shoot on a 7D, so APS-C. I noticed before I bought the L Lens that I often shoot around that focal length (in fact, my trusty old Tamron 17-35mm is my most used lens). So I jumped on the chance to get the 24mm. It's a lovely lens. I'm sure you will love it too. :)
