Does anyone have this lens? noticed there are no sample photographs in the archives and I would love to see them as I am thinking of buying this lens - any comments welcome.

Thanks

I was considering this lens instead of my 35L. I shot a PM to a user named efroten, who I knew was a big fan. His gallery has a lot of excellent shots with this lens, he says it's his favorite:

http://www.pbase.com/efroten/chicago

I hope he doesn't mind me posting it. I'm still trying to convince myself there is a spot for this lens in my bag...

Moderators, I'm sorry for the double post.

24L and 1DsII on tripod. Cropped a wee bit.

f/16; 8 seconds; ISO 200.

A couple of test photos - not spectacular by any stretch. Just took the lens for a walk at the local park today.

http://www.pbase.com/photosbytom/image/78567498/large.jpg

The only thing crooked in this shot is the photographer - excellent distortion characteristics:

http://www.pbase.com/photosbytom/image/78567496/large.jpg

Putzing around the house - 24 mm is really wide on a 5D, yet with f/1.4, you can get a rather shallow DOF:

http://www.pbase.com/photosbytom/image/78567493/large.jpg

and the 100% center crop:

http://www.pbase.com/photosbytom/image/78567874.jpg

Like I said, nothing spectacular. Just testing (and exploring the local parks).

PS - nice shot, Josh.

Thanks, Tom.

I notice some green fringing on your 100% crop. I guess that's to be expected at f/1.4! :) I can tell you that in the middle of the aperture range this lens is crystal.

Good test shots, Tom.
The last 100% shot shows the resolving power of the lens, and as Josh has observed, there is a bit of a green fringe on the light border, hardly a surprise given the shot conditions.

Thanks, Tom.

The green fringing appears to occur only on the out-of-focus background/foreground on my test images. That's common at extremely wide apertures, and I think in more normal situations, contributes to the smoothness of the bokeh (IMHO). The lights, BTW, are way overexposed since they weren't weighted heavily in metering by the camera.

It feels odd talking about bokeh with an ultrawide, but at f/1.4, it is a consideration.

Another silly test shot that I took last night while wandering through the house looking for things to shoot....

http://www.pbase.com/photosbytom/image/78567500/large.jpg

And the 100% crop (OK, actually, a 50% crop so that it would fit the 800 pixel limit). the plane of focus is right at the center of the clock, but even at f/1.4, there isn't a great deal of blur towards the close and far edges.:

http://www.pbase.com/photosbytom/image/78570304.jpg

I'm finding that I really like this lens. I had a "rough" copy of it a couple of years ago, but it was plagued with a very loose focus ring, physical damage where somebody had tried to disassemble the lens, and a great deal of CA towards the edges of the image. I think that old copy had been through some rough treatment. It took a little convincing to get me to buy another. And I'm glad that I did.

BTW to the OP, those photos are awesome. Great color and composition. The lens has a lot to do with how they look technically, but there is no way a hack could take these photos with the same gear. I'd love to see how the Sigma 24mm f/1.8 compares.

No polarizer and some contrast adjustments but no saturation. If I'm going to shoot something that I'm going to show the sky I usually try and do it when the skys are blue and the air is dry. Low humidity.

This lens really shines on a FF camera.

Agreed. The 24L is not magical wide-open and certainly will not make you go "ooh" and "aah" over sharpness unless stopped down. But it did do its job and saved my butt in a crunch during a wedding reception this past weekend when the 24-105L just couldn't handle the situation. This lens is good for what it does and I'm keeping her. Love the FL on a 1.6x crop. I'll post some samples later this week.

I think it boils down to which FL you prefer. I love the 24L both an a 1.6x crop and FF. On FF it gives me a nice wide FOV and a fast aperture to shoot with. Something that I highly value. On a 1.6x crop it's like a 35mm lens, so it's like having the best of both worlds. Don't get me wrong, the 35L was among the sharpest lens' I've ever owned after the 135L, but I prefer the 24mm in terms of what it offers me in perspective. Given the money and opportunity, I'd own both. ;)

yeah I think either would have suited me but in the end I went for te 35 more for streeet shooting, although actually I think the 24 would just as well for that too. Tiny bit wide for me on the FF for street though perhaps , anyway the main deciding factor I went for the 35 was I had been taking some portraits in envirnoment and just loved the colour etc bbut the subject was not distorted and the bokeh was beautiful, I was trying one out and was just blown away:D

Thanks. The 24L is a great versatile lens. I often wonder how I ever got along without it. Truly one of Canon's most underrated L lenses.

All three lenses are a great additions to any kit bag. I find the 24L to be the most useful of the three on FF and crop.

Well, airfrog and ed and everyone ... damn you all and such. My 24L will be here in a couple days. Snatched it for $900 shipped + PP'ed, so I am pretty happy with the deal. Can't wait for it to get here!

ed, those rock, btw.

now I just need the 50L and the 200 f/2L. :)

Airfrog, do you ever feel like having the 24 and 35 is redundant? I'm worried I won't use the 24 as much as it deserves, but I guess we'll find out.

Really like that first one especially. That's what I love about the 35L and 24L, is that you can get a fast aperture, shallow DOF, but still include enough background to give an image context.

That, and I am 24, so the 24mm will be extra special :P.

When are we going to see some sample shots with your new 24L, Ryan? ;)

I don't think the 24 + 35 is redundant. But I think it starts to become redundant if you throw a 16-35 and/or 24-70 in there as well. Although the 35L was a damn good lens, I much prefer the 24L.

Not soon enough :( I was hoping to take it to Boston with me in a couple days, but don't think it's going to get here in time.

Ed, that's true about the mid/wide-zooms ... that's why I went with the 17-40, since the extra money for the sweet 16-35 could have gone to another fast prime, which I'd use more.

I will get a duck shot when I get it ... I think it'll be my first duck shot ever :P

I think this lens fills the wide niche better than the 35L in terms of what you get on FF and 1.6x crop. Those mirror shots of me were taken using the 20D (38.4mm FOV equivalent). Nevertheless, I still think the 35L is a great FL, I just prefer the 24.

On the 30D the 35 doesn't give you a wide FoV its like a 56mm on a FF (normal). The 24 would be like 38.

I love the fact that this lens is not overly hyped like the holy trinity. Let's hope it stays that way. Best kept secret in the L prime line-up if you ask me. 5D + 24L is the combo to beat IMO.

The 24mm was W. Eugene Smith's favorite focal length. I think this is the lens to beat for good old fashioned street photojournalism. Yeah, you'll have to get up close and personal for portraits, but you'll also capture some incredible scenes at 24mm. I say go for it.

Yeah, I'm using this hood on my 17-40mm and it's tight there (and before you say different lens, they all share the same hood attachment design if they start with EW). You can dremel/sand/remove the little bumps that are in the gaps and it will be MUCH easier. You can also just use it a bit and it will wear down. Depends on how you like the fit IMHO.

Man I should never have opened this thread...

Picked up mines, funny as the seller had the hood reversed on and advised me to cut it off and buy a new one. He was too scared himself to force it off.

heh, thanks to flickr's "stats' feature I just discovered your link to my photo on flickr. thanks for the linkage!

I've had no hood issues with my lens hood, other than the fact that I cracked it in half when I dropped my camera a few weeks back! Luckily the camera was only about a foot off the ground and landed on the under side of the hood. The hood literally popped off when it cracked in half on the under side. I used some electrical tape to seal the crack and the hood works fine still, its just a little loose.
