Everyone has a business name. What's yours? I've been trying to figure out what I want to have for a business name, but with all the ones already out there, it's hard to pick one that no one has.

Crestview Photography. We live on Crestview Dr. We're planning on building a new house next year, but the name is generic enough to stay.

Mine is Brooks Images with my website at brooksimages.com
I started with Brooks Photography, but not only was the domain not available, there are several businesses with that name around the world, plust the Brooks Institute of Photography. If you google brooks images, I come up first.

I was thinking about changing it to DWAC Photo though since it'd be more accurate.

It is easier to just use your name, if you pick something else you will need to register it to make it legal. It also makes sure that no one else has it. I just use Shawn Wills Photography / Soul proprietor. You will also need to get State and Fed tax ID numbers.

Manipula. Suprisingly. ;) Came after asking the guys on my car club/forum, a lot of whom are businessmen with successful businesses, and a chap called Dave Brown owner of several deeply successful websites just came up with it. Agreed I could use it in exchange for a mention in my memoirs when I'm famous. I'm sure having met him at a lot of trackdays helped too. I'm deeply endebted.

The law does not require a totally unique name for every business. You need to do business in the counties in which you offer your services, under a unique name. But nothing says that someone, else five counties away from where you are located, cannot use the same name. And if you use YOUR name, there is nothing at all that prevents you from using your name...you would want to make it somehow distinctive, simply to avoid confusion! So you might be John Jones Creative Arts while another guy in the same community is John Jones Portraiture

It's actually E Cubed, but can't type that out. LOL
My maiden name gave me 3 E's for my initials and when I was in High School my nickname was E Cubed. :) Therefore the obvious name for my business. LOL

Sierra Nova Photographics. It's a business partnership and we wanted something with a bit of ourselves, but not our direct names. We thought of call signs, sierra is good, november is sucky, so we went with nova.
Business names are hard - you (hopefully) get stuck with them a long time!

What speciality of photography are you pursuing? Weddings? Portraits/studio? Nature? Sports? Events?
That might make it easier to determine a name you like. It's not easy - I struggled for a name only to not like it that much later on. Now, I'm trying to come up with something I like better and not having much success.
Good luck

My first Studio was in a building that sold Antique furniture "Mountain Memories" When I Started renting the place I kept the sign on the front of the biulding and added Photography.
So the studio name is "Mountain Memories Photography"
Our Wedding site is MMP Weddings and the sports site is Luray Sports.
I wanted to seperate the Wedding photography from the Family portrait thats why I have a seperate site for that. Same with the sports/little league photography.

My Business is called Enspri.
The idea was something to do with inspired thinking but had to be a bit different so i went for enspire.
My name was so good a jolly collagen company stole it from me before I had enough cash to think about applying for a registered trademark.
However Because i was in first I own, the .com,the .com.au, the .net, the .org, the.ws, and the .info.
I have been specialising in website and multimedia development, however had to put it on hold because it interferred with my studies. Later in the year I will be offering more photography related services, and more visual effects and animation services.

Stoked On Photos is mine. I get very excited and animated when talking about photography or when shooting. My clients also get very stoked on the images I provide them. The whole "stoked" may not fly with some of the veterans of the art or traditional set photogs but my photography isn't for them to begin with and my market is younger at 16-35ish.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm bored this afternoon!
About 10 years ago I bought the domain 'The Backcountry (http://www.thebackcountry.org)" to showcase my backpacking and hiking trips/photos. When I got 'into' photography I decided on "Images in the Backcountry" because of the name The Backcountry and all I do is nature photography.

I'm just starting to put everything together for a business, so one night over dinner, a few close friends and I got going on trying to find a clever name. I was about to throw in the towel on being clever and use my name. (I know there's nothing wrong with that at all, but I just wanted something else.)
My cousin looked at me and said "How about...?", and I ended up with Yoder Art Works. Catchy, easy, and the ".com" was available! :D ;)

Been debating a name for a while ... Sue Thomas Photography would be first choice, but if you Google Sue Thomas you quickly learn about a TV show that has nothing to do with me.
So thinking that 'Sue T Photography' might be a wiser choice.
However, also wonder about using "Imagery" instead of "Photography" since my work includes editing photos taken by others and scanning/editing/repairing old photos.
The debate continues ...

We are W Gallerie. I read in a business book that the shorter the name the better. We want our name to refelect more that we are artist's than photographers. Previously we were Illustrative Images (Since we did and still do a lot of montaging.) But it was TOOO LONG!

I'm trying to decide on a business name right now as many of you did at one point. I know a lot of photographers out there use their name in some way shape or form, but I feel thats an easy way out...and pretty unoriginal. The harder more creative answer is to come up with something else, that makes sense to the work you're doing. So I've resisted buying a domain with my name in it. Just because I know I'm creative enough to come up with something more original and catchy. And its not easy at all.
Its been a few months that I've been mulling over it, and nothing yet. Domain names do play a role in what I have been trying to decide on. That and the fact I'm trying to pick a name that says "Photo + Cinema" so that I can offer up photography and video solutions.
My favorite is taken... Still Motion
So I'm now on my quest...

I didn't want to do the same old "name" photography. Took me awhile to think of something, I originally thought I would do Breathless Moments Photography. but decided I did want something with my name on it, so the business would be associated with me. So I later decided on "Snaps by Poteat' poteat is my last name so it works and I've had several people tell me that it's catchy, different and cute! Just FYI Poteat is pronounced poe-teet. :)
