I have seen the odd one or two on sites I have visited and wandered what was the advantage to having them there?

In commercial photography, a tear sheet means you have successfully completed a photo job for a client and delivered an image of high enough quality for reproduction. This is very reassuring to a potential client to know that you can produce professional quality images, as opposed to a random collection of images in a portfolio which may be just the lucky shots you have made over the years.

Yep, I'll add that certain professional associations accept tearsheets as proof of publication, which is often a requirement of membership.
