I am undecided about this shot. I like the subject, but the waterline is dead centered. Does this ruin the shot, or does the off-centered house counteract this enough?

Looks good, but I think I like a little less tight of a crop. The reason I like the left side of the picture is that the background with the highlighted powerlines leads my eyes to the house. And I like the fallen log in the foreground.
Color-wise, is this any better?

I like the shot. Sometimes you have to break the rules to get the shot.

The shot actually works pretty well, since the shack is the focal point, the dead center waterline doesn't really draw that much attention away...a slight curve adjustment, raise things just a touch up on the sat and resharpen and you should have a fairly interesting shot. Stay away from that crop suggestion...that is a terrible crop and ruins the impact of the whole shot.

I liked it straight away. The first and original. Rules are made to be broken!!!
