Can I get some feelings on this shot? I grabbed this today and thus far on the site I have gotten some helpful insight that has helped me.

Thanks

Wow! 9 hours with no reply surprised me because this is a very nice job. Nice tones, edge/soft effects, etc. Well done. /Dan

I like the softness and the sweet expression, but the lighting isn't all that good. The overhead lighting is illuminating the tip of her nose and her cheeks. Her eyes and forehead are in the shadow. This type of lighting is very similiar to what is known as 'raccoon eyes" in outdoor portraiture.

too much PP and as noted above bad lighting.

Thanks for the opinions and advice, though I highly disagree with the too much PP comment on this photo. I should have included my desired outcome in the photo to create a soft angelic look. Being newer to the forums I will include that information going forward. Perhaps strmrdr you can show me some reference photos on how I can achieve this look utilizing less PP?
Thanks

I agree with you, chuck. In my opinion, it is exactly the lighting and the pp that make this work. The eyes being inset into the shadows (lighting) makes the eyes look even bigger, more aware. The PP is self explanatory, it was you goal. If soft/angelic was it, you achieved it. Sometimes there is an overemphasis on rules. Rules of thirds, rules of lighting, rules of exposure. Sometimes breaking one, if not all the rules, is what enables the successful realization of a vision and what distinguishes one from the crowd of many. /Dan

Excellent shot. The processing for my taste is right on despite previous comments. The sepia coloring works. There is no confusing the angelic look and feel of this shot. Excellent set up, excellent execution, excellent subject. A keeper if ever I saw one. This one should make the parents as well as the photographer proud, and if one and the same more so.

I think the her face is about right for the look you were going for but the transition between soft and blurred is in the wrong place and too abrupt.
The hardest line in the picture is in her hair and distracting.
bringing more of her hair in then blending it into a soft line would be much better.
