A fast normal or short telephoto prime would help.

Two lenses that are highly recommended for portraits on a 1.6 crop camera such as your XT are the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 or the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8. These are very reasonably priced consumer prime lenses that provide considerable value (quality for the price).

There are plenty of expensive alternatives, but either of these lense is capable of delivering quality portraiture.

85 f1.8 would be my first choice, followed by 50 f1.4.. if you want an afforadable prime lens..

If you want an affordable zoom, the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 is a great lens for the price.

One can have the best lens and take terrible pics.
Conversely, One can have the cheapest lens and take great pics.

The bottom line is vision and technique.

Long, long time ago went I was a kid I walk around w/ a 35mmSLR w/ a 50mm lens and took some horrible pics and later I found friends that would lend me their Hassy and Nikon F2AS to shoot and not much changed. The pics were still horrible.

Oh, I highly recommend trying one with a 5D attached to it!
