Is there a reason to own both?

Two totally different lenses. You have both...you tell us.

I would say so, the 50 focuses much faster and is a complete different focal length, the 85L is a speciality lens designed for portraits

As some one who owns, uses and loves both the 50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.8 and lusts after the 85 1.2; my answer would be a big YES! I mainly shoot models and feel the 50mm is great for 3/4 to full length in a medium size studio and head shots and 1/2 length in more confined areas while the 85 works great for head, head and shoulders and1/2 in medium sizes space and 3/4 full length outside or in a larger studio/area.

Since I use cropped body (20D) the 50 gets used 80-90% of the time of course if I had a FF that would be reversed and I'd being using the 85mm 50 or 60% of the time instead of the current 10%
