View Full Version : What is the proper way to install E1 Hand Strap?

I've fiddled around with the hand strap, but seriously doubt I've installed it properly. It sure doesn't look right.

Does anyone know the proper way to do it? Or do you know of a link to someone that knows what how to do it?

I don't trust myself at this point.

Thanks.

If you look at the 1ds manual (download link below) there is a diagram in it (page 36) that shows the method to attach. I was kind of bummed, that the E1 strap did not come with the MkII. Oh well, ...

There's also an illustrated diagram in the instructions for the battery grip. At least... there was on the ones you sent me  :D

Look around to see if you have the intructions for your other one, and if not, I can scan these, and post an image for you.

Funny this should come up today. I actually installed the hand strap and the OP/TECH Weight Reduction System neck/shoulder strap this afternoon. It was a wee bit of a struggle to get both straps through the attatchment point on the top of the body but it did work. Now I have the best of both worlds.
BTW the straps were installed on a 10D + BiGEd.

Nope......just prone to dropping things. If I could get a waist strap around that sucker I would

You got the OP/TECH, and the E1 through one of those slots? I had a hard enough time getting the OP/TECH on it's own through there. Man... thanks for selling Tom on that strap... because he had an extra and sent it to me :D It is way more comfortable than the "Canon Digital" one. I have yet to install the handstrap. It was basically because I assumed it wouldn't fit through the slot, in addition to the OP/TECH strap. Now you've convinced me to go and try to cram it through there

Chris,
I'm using a OP/TECH Pro Loop strap and the loops can sort of be flattened and the tip of the hand strap will just slide in on top of the loop. A little careful prodding with a micro flat blade screw driver will push the hand strap strap through and you can then just gently pull it all the way. Looks rather neat and makes it a lot esaier to carry the camera.

In the destructions for BG -ED it shows attaching the E1 strap through the buckle of the main neck strap rather then through the body attachment loop.

Anybody ever tried the op/tech stabilizer strap? Looks like a good idea if a bit geeky......of course I have that issue already...

In the instructions I have (1Ds manual), the E1 strap is fed through the 3 slotted plate, through the body anchor and bach on its self. The the neck strap goes through the 3rd slot in that 3 slotted plate. Its actually pretty easy to do.

What a coincidence. I just ordered one from B&H Photo just a couple of minutes ago!

Tom, I'll expect a step by step posting with illustrations on how you made out with the strap. No sense two people busting their brains out trying to figure it out.

Thanks everyone. I just got back from an amazing Mexican dinner and found all these excellent suggestions. As soon as the stomach stops trying to turn itself inside out, I'll try some of them.

(Good food. Bad stomach)

BTW, I had a similar problem getting the OpTech strap through the eyelet on the 10D, so I took a straightened paper clip, formed a small hook on one end, and pulled it through, just like a darning hook.

Thanks, Scott.

That's two I owe you! It all makes perfect sense once you see the picture.

I am now going to install the OpTech strap. This is what we call 'baby steps'.

Now that I'm a seasoned veteran on the subject of installing straps, I'm able to offer absolute assurance that you'll have no trouble whatsoever if you follow the directions that Scott provided the link to. It really is nice having them both on the camera, and it's well worth the trouble. When properly installed, the E1 strap provides a separate eyelet through which you can attach the strap quite easily. I really should have been able to figure that out on my own.

Agree Op/Tech is arkward to get in the 10D slot but what bothers me more is that once in, its tightness prevents it giving in to gravity in certain positions. Am thinking of attaching with a key ring at each end but such may scratch the camera.

Any other solutions?

Gees, I should learn to read the instructions  After friggin around with the E1 and OP/Tech Pro Loop Weight Reduction System for the better part of an hour, I saw Tom's post about attatching the wrist strap. I figured that I had invented a new wheel and posted a long drawn out explaination of how to force the E1 strap through the eyelet with the neck strap loop already throught said eyelet. Then Scott posts a link and I look at that and in a matter of 3 seconds both are attatched properly.
Thanks Scott!
Now where did I put that instruction manual for the 10D :?: :?: :?:

It's funny... I never even really looked at the instructions that came with the battery grip (even though that was my recommendation to you, Tom). I didn't realize there was an extra eyelet either. I have now joined the elite, that have the OP/TECH and E1 straps working together in unity. Now that feels good in my hand. Oh yeah baby... nirvana.

Hey, Laz. That's a fine shot. I've attempted similar photos here, but have only a collection of broken mirrors to show for my efforts. Some folks are just more photogenic than others.

It's a funny thing about Canon's printed instructions; when they come in booklet form, I read them. When they're folded multi-language instructions sheets, I tend to ignore them. I suupose I think that if there was anything really important to say, they'd put it in a book.

I mean, how difficult can it be to install a strap on a camera body? I guess we know the answer now.

Apparently... difficult enough to make all of us look a bit less intelligent than we already did. D'OH! At least now we are all "in the know", and can point and laugh at the newbies who come along, wide eyed with bewilderment, as they ask how to attach the E1 strap. Either that... or be laughed at by the newbies that come along, who point and laugh at those of us who were confused by such simplicity  :D

The links above now goes somewhere else and have a neck strap and the E-1.

No earthly idea how to make this work. amazon.com has the 'install' photos that make zero sense.

Help please! hehe

It's clumsy the first time you do it, but after a couple times it makes sense. :)
