Went out today to practice with the 200-400 for some bird shots when I saw this little guy running across the path, Luckily I had the 105 in the camera bag.

Interesting looking spider Lawrie, good find. You're game picking it up, red usually means dangerous, and I make it a habit to steer clear of red spiders ;)

Wonderful capture. Like Dave,I am cautions with actual contact with my 8 legged friends. A few summers ago, got a nasty spider bite that blew my leg up, then got infected. No fun at all.

Famous last words ;).
Good shots. And, you're braver than I. I don't touch spiders, just photograph them.

Love the colors in that spider. Your braver than i am... we don't have the best selection of spiders here in Western New York so i'm jealous.

Thanks All for these comments
Mark, You are correct this spider has been ID'd as Nicodamus peregrinus (Red and Black Spider)
As far as poisonous, From what I remeber at school I a looong time ago) and confirmed by the entomology peaple at CSIRO our most deadly and harmful spiders and either all black and very dark brown in color. The brightly colored ones are to scare preditors away.
Thanks for all those who were concerned for my safety.

Nice shots, and lovely looking spider! Usually any bright colored creatures are poisonous, but I'm sure the spider didn't mind you :)
I dont like touching spiders either, just photograpghing them, infact the other night, I was in my car getting something and I saw a little spider hanging from my mirror by a web. I was like "W00T TIME FOR THE CAMERA" so I tried getting him to the house (way to dark outside to see him with a camera). To make a long story short, he feel off the web, landed somewhere on me and I freaked out, ran in the house stripping and yelling to the girlfreind to find it, lmao. Sorry for the story, but thought someone would get a laugh outta that.

I'm not really afraid of spiders, I really dont mind them to much... but if I dont know where they are, and I think there on my body, thats when I get freaked out. I have heard stories of spiders laying eggs in peoples skin, and when doctors cut open what they think is a blister or something, a million tiny spiders come running out. I dont want that happening ;) I wont go and kill a spider because its sharing space in my house.
My mom on the other hand, I could be in the other room listening to loud music.. and I will hear the shriek from hell, thinking she got possesed by Banshees from hell, I go running out to see a spider the size of an asprin pill. "KILL IT SHANE!!! GRAB A SHOE AND KILL IT!!!"...
