View Full Version : Seamless Backdrop Question

I hope I'm posting in the right section.
I'm considering buying some seamless background paper, Savage or Superior or alike, the 107"x12 yards I believe they are. The odd question is, anyone know how big the width of the rolls are when they are rolled up for shipment?
I considered buying it from Adorama, but the shipping is outrageous (twice the cost of 1 backdrop to ship it here the cheapest way possible). So I found a place about 4 hours from here that carries it (save shipping and spend more on the backdrops, he he) so I figured i could pick up one or two rolls (hopefully 2) if we go up there to the zoo with the kids and slide them under the seats. But I'm afraid they're wider than can be slid under the seat. Anyone know how wide those seamless backdrops are?

Thanks!

Hi Sue,

A standard 12 yard roll of seamless paper is about 5" in diameter.

That's awesome, that means at least one maybe two if we do it right will fit just fine under the seats! Woo Hoo...off shopping I go! ;)

I envy you your vehicle. Our RAV4 will not hold a roll of photo paper that long. It has to stick the window and for 6 months of the year around here that means it all gets wet.

Maybe I should pass on some camera gear and buy a decent size vehicle....

I drive a small Nissan Sentra. Part of the reason I joined NAPP was to take advantage of the free B&H shipping for large and long items. Otherwise shipping costs would kill me.

Yes but I assume you can conveniently drive to the store that sells the paper. For me, although I am in NY, it's not terribly convenient to drive into Manhattan, park or pay for parking, gas and tolls, the time and headache and drive home. A few hours minimum are shot and it quickly becomes something unpleasant and more costly than having it shipped. The one store around here that does have the large rolls are overpriced on everything so after paying their inflated price plus sales tax it's also not a great solution for me.

I've actually thought about making some PVC carrierers for the paper rolls and installing a roof rack. At least the windows wouldn't have to stay open.

Minivan = family car. :p
I'm not a minivan kind of person but with me and hubby and 3 kids, our cars were getting cramped, esp when my parents fly over to visit, to rent one for 2 weeks 3 times a year gets sort of expensive, so it made more sense to buy one. I measured it to lay one under the seats from "trunk" to the front where hubby and I sit it was 125 inches, so my roll of 107 would fit. And the narrowest space under the seats was the very back seat with I think 6-7 inches high/wide, I got a reply here the rolls were 5" and the store I was buying from replied 3-4 inches so no problems in fitting 1 or 2 in there if I do it right.
LOL nahhh stick with gear, that's what I'd do, unless of course you lug around a whole lot of people often? ;)

Man do I feel stupid - NAPP?
Free shipping would be nice, I agree with that. The shipping is the reason I haven't bought more larger items from B&H or Adorama, I just don't want to spend that kind of money (twice the cost of item) to get it here.

Hi Sue,

NAPP is the National Association of Photoshop Professionals. It doesn't mean that it's members are anything special. Anyone that wants to pay for membership can join. There is a rather long list of benefits, many of which are not even described on the site until you join and log in, but one of its benefits that was of particular interest to me was the free shipping at B&H.

The membership is $99 for a year and I'm sure for many that don't have any other interest than the free shipping then it's not something you would join but for anyone that is using Adobe Photoshop and/or Lightroom the education alone is worth the annual fee.

If you order any reasonable amount of stuff from B&H you know the shipping can kill you and the $99 pays for itself quickly. Since I joined 2 months ago I've saved $30 in shipping. I know for certain that by the end of the year I will have ordered enough to far exceed $99 in shipping costs and that is only B&H. There are numerous vendors in cluding PC Mall and the Apple Store where you save as well.

No, I'm not advertising for them but I think many could be taking advantage of some great discounts on books, DVD's, text and video tutorials and all the Merchants offering savings to NAPP members.

You can check them out at: http://www.photoshopuser.com/ and if you call them you can get more details about member benefits that might not be listed on the site.

Thanks Robert.
Something I have to look into down the line. I've ordered from B&H, but I seem to go to Adorama more now, their prices are slightly better and often they've had stuff in stock that B&H have on backorder.
I'll look into it one of these days for sure, it sounds interesting.
