is the canon 18-55mm worth it

Two Sigma lenses for the price of one Canon lens speaks for itself. You get what you pay for.

I went with the Dreb and the lens kit. So far, what I've read about the 18-55 kit lens has been true. Its worth the 100 bucks.

You'll probably find as much negative chatter on this board about Sigma as you will positive. Granted, its a Canon board, but Sigma takes a lot of hits because of the compatibility issue. The optics may be good, but I like my lenses to continue to work when I upgrade my camera body. [Shields up] Even if Sigma re-chips them or whatever magic they perform, I give the Canon lenses an edge for that.

I bought the DRebel with the kit lens. It's OK but I found that in general, the kit lens did not deliver as consistently crisp images as the lens on my G2. Again, it's OK and worth the $100, but it is not going to be anything that you will say is your "favorite lens". The one nice thing that it does, is gives you a lens to go with the body in the event that you decide to upgrade the body at a future date and sell the DRebel.

I find that I am using the Canon 50mm f/1.8 for more shots than the kit lens except where I need more wide angle. As a starter, you might want to consider the body only and add the 50mm f1.8 II. This will start you at about $925 or so and let you save the remainder for something like the Canon 70-200 f/4.0L (unless you need to do a lot of inside and/or low light shooting).

As a long time sSigma supporter.. all I can say is "Those Sigma Lenses are crap!!!"

Really,. those two particular lenses are not to be considered any where near the quality of the Sigma's that some of the Sigma users like myself will champion the use of.

In this case definately get the Canon

My own personal lens philosophy is this. Canon makes a wide selection of lenses. If I had this decision:

Canon XYZ for $500 or Sigma XYZ for $500 ?

Then my decision would be easy. Buy Canon.

If it changed to this one:

Canon XYZ for $500 or Sigma XYZ for $300 ?

... then the decision is more difficult.

You have to study the specifications and then study the reviews.

I had to make a lens decision where Canon does not make such a focal length, and Sigma does. Even if Canon did make it, it would cost at least three times as much as the Sigma cost me. Then Sigma got my vote.
