I am not sure whether I like this one. It is awkward because of having to expose for the bright light sources coming from the towers while not wanting the dimly lit waterfront buildings to be lost in the shadows.

A layer mask was used to cut out the lights at the tops of the towers, which had blown-out, and reveal an under-exposed shot underneath to recover detail in them. The towers were also masked so that separate curves could be used for them and the rest of the shot.

Any suggestions on how I could have improved the shot are appreciated.

That is an overall nice shot but as you pointed out the exposure is a little too much.

What did you shoot this with? If it was in raw u could possibly try dialing down the exposure to take some of that blown out light away.

Give us a little info on your camera.

Expose one shot for the shadows. And another for the highlights. Then go into photomatix and use the 'Shadow and Highlight' merge function.

Ditto. You could also overlap the 2 images in PS and erase the part of the top image you don't want
