I tried to get down on the field for a state soccer tournament this weekend by telling them I was shooting freelance for a local paper.. well at least I had a long zoom.

What have you said or done to get that shot?

I told my wife that a 100-400 L IS costs "about a hundred dollars."

She didn't buy it, but I did.

This winter I snuck into the press-area of the last worldcup event for the season in the skijumping cup in Norway. My 10D and 70-200 was my "press credentials". So it was today at a dragracing-event =D Works like a charm... Today I actually was friggin stupid.. I was there as part of a dragster-team, and had nothing to do with press. But I just walked over to the press-area which had this nice elevated possition above the stage. I asked if I could go up to shoot some pics, cause I really wanted to shoot the first burnout of the teams car this season. Then he said: "Sure, you look professional, go ahead". And silly me answered: "Nono, I'm not press, I'm here as a team" and showed him my team-pass. A second after I did that I thought: "Oh my God, what an idiot I am!!". But believe it or not, he smiled and said: "Go ahead, but if you want to reenter, be sure to show most of your camera, and least of your team-pass" =D So I got access to the elevated possition above the stage to shoot the first and (unfortunately) last burnout the team did that day, as the chick floored the pedal at the green light, the ... Don't know what this is called in english.. The spinning thing connected between the transmission and the "thingy" back there which in turn transform the energy out to the rear wheels... anyway, the force of the new engine broke it clean off :/ I stayed for the rest of the day shooting pictures anyway, and came back with around 3GB, some good ones to :)

EDIT: Pics of the damage (first one from press-area where I "snuck" in)

Nice shots, Vvizard. I've seen a few broken car parts, but not this one - until now.

One of the problems with using heavy-duty U-joints on the drive shaft is that when something breaks, instead of it being a cheap u-joint, it is something more expensive. In this case, she broke the pinion shaft on the car's differential, causing the drive shaft to fall to the ground (I'm guessing that it bounced around a bit sparking and all when it let loose). I suspect there was a loud and somewhat expensive bang. I hope not much else was damaged.

Man! I've used that one a few times.

Funny thing. I was just at the drags today and will have some photos to share soon.
The unfortunate thing about the broken drive shaft is that the car owner put his/her eggs into one basket. Too much horse power and likely a factory differential.

Thats why I raced motorcycles. Faster than cars and break less. of course hitting a June bug at 160mph on a bike hurts more. Friend of a friend had a Honda Civic turning low 9s in the 1/4 and never had that problem.

Forgot my lie, walk up to girls, camera in hand and say your scouting for a mag. Ya cant say for sure her pic will be used, but its a perfect in. Gotten a few girls for friends that way, or at least a couple of nights for friends..............the part were you tell them your married, but your gear man isn't seems to lend credibility.... go figure.

Seems like the longer the lense, the better the line works. Plus I gotta stay in practice. I'm married now, but next week? People get eaten by bears all the time, know where I can get a 15 pound beef necklace?

does this mean the DO series lenses are destined to fail?

Not necessarily, its just the smaller the lense, the uglier the chick.

Disclaimer: I'm not a mechanic whatsoever. Only way I'm "part of" this team during events, is that the girl driving this car have been one of my best friends for several years, and I'm a sponsor for the team, building and hosting their webpages. But not at all any mechanics. Anyway, since some of you guys apparently know a lot more about this than I do, I'll try to explain what happened yesterday, from how I have interpereted it from what the teams mechanics and driver said.. This thread should probably by moved out of the EOS-section now though..

The engine used in the car yesterday is a fairly weak one. 347bhp I think. One of their sponsors are building a new engine for it, which will be between 600-700bhp, and shall hopefully be ready for the drag next weekend. So this engine was a loaned one just to compete in the opening of this years cup. They knew the way the shaft was connected (U-bolts?) was a weak point, but took a chance. Where I stood, I heard no loud bang, but of course, there where a lot of engine noise from this car, and the one it raced against. But a bang there was, the girl inside heard it and imediatley turned off the electronics. The fireman apparently heard it as he came running at once. Where I stood I just saw the shaft spinning on the ground, and the car standing still. They think the reason it broke, was because this track is one of the few "real" drag-strips in norway, used for races in the European TopFuel cup and such. It have a anti-slip "coating", which helps increase grip, and reduce wheel-spinning. When the green light came, and the brake was released, and all that force from the engine is released through the wheels into the tarmac, they think it broke because of that coating, since the wheels weren't "allowed" to spin on this track. Anyway.. **** happens, whatever caused it. They think there where no damages to the shaft or the engine itself, and the shaft shall be strengthened and installed again for next weekend, when they hopefully have their 650+ bhp engine :)

I'm from the school of thought that says: If you're going to lie, make it a whopper. Why bother with little lies; little lie or not, you're still a liar.

Hmmm...
I remember there was a time that I was shooting the 10D/Sigma 120-300mm F2.8EX combo and was asked if I was pro. I said that I was on the edge of pro and was more like keen amateur.

The more amusing one was when I was shooting the very last flight of a certain plane from Heathrow to Filton in Bristol...I was asked if I'd send some copies of the pics I took to someone I had never met until then and there. I said that I was leaving the country in the next few days and that there was no further contact info available. This was mid Nov, 2003. The curse was on me again...the second I open my mouth it is very obvious that I am not British, but American, (or Canadian a lot of British people seem to think). I have fooled many British that way, but I am American.

Latest, well my 120-300mm sigma 2.8 was delivered today. My wife signed for it and set it on my desk. She later asked what it was since it was not clear on the shipping label. I just told her it was some arborist stuff. Hoping she will not notice "much" difference between its size and my 70-200mm 2.8. (Remember women have been lied to about size all their lives)

LOL! Hey now ;) Eventually we find out :P

I can't tell hubby that I want more camera equipment, he doesn't say no. Neither of us have a LOT of willpower - but we manage to find a happy medium. I do try and keep him out of the local camera dealer's place though ... the last time I let him go unsupervised he came back with a $1000 zoom lens ... <sigh>

Ahhh. White lies ... :-/ ya know, never have .... not to get in for pictures. Least not yet anyway :D

Can you teach my wife not to say no when I walk into the motorcycle dealer? Got my eye on a Hyabusa. Cant convince her everyone needs a bike that will do 190mph.

That's something else we want ... a couple of motorcyles. Soon my precious ... soon ...

KTMs are nice bikes, looking at one for my son. I on the other hand prefer those stupidly fast bikes, GSXRs, CBRs, Apillas, etc. The only problem is the insurance is more than the payment. That and the last one I had I was on my third rear tire at 6000 miles and the front still looked new. I use them as motorized unicycles.
