according to the NG Photography Field Guide ...
is a guideline developed by artists centuries ago. When the subject - or its most important element - is placed near one of the intersecting points of an imaginary grid < the grid dividing the frame by ' thirds ' or nine rectangles > , the viewer's eye is led through the frame. The result is an aesthetically strong image .
sorry , no photo to illustrate better .

Rule of thirds is actually an approximation of the "Golden Section". The Golden Section is a ratio that is repeated throughout nature, e.g. placement of the eyes on a human's face, the branching of many plants etc. I.e. it pleases us to see pictures following this ratio.
While searching for "rule of thirds" also search for "golden section", it'll turn up lots of stuff.
Cheers

interesting .... one of the golden section numbers is 1.6 .... which is more or less the magnification of the CANON CMOS sensor over 35 mm film ...

Yeah Ian, nature really is brilliant, placing our eyes above our nose so we can sight with our nose to find our mouth. Imagine what a mess it would be the other way around... :D

yep... imagine the nose would be under our mouth (perhaps also upside down, with the holes/nostrils up).
You eat and what doesn't go in the mouth stucks in the nose

Dunno, drooling in your eyes over a 1DMKII doesn't sound sooo good...
... but smearing your LCD with your chin sounds like an improvement over your greasy nose...
Where does facial hair grow?
Cem? Cem?
...where'd Cem go?

No danger your ice-cream will drip on your chin, as all goes immediately on the table
