Can this lens be used with a 1D?
Yes, no vignetting due to the built-in lens hood from about 13 mm, still having a 180 degree AoV diagonally at that FL with the 1D.

love them all , and the first one to me is the best .
your lens is nice , I will definitely consider it although I already have the Canon 10-22 , the fishy is cool and the Tokina is pretty sharp as a fishy and shares the same SMC coating of Pentax.
Thanks for this post.

No, it doesn't. But because the AoV at 17 mm on a APS-C cam is only about 120 degrees or thereabouts, if not less, it isn't as obvious, unless you would really point it down or up.
Kind regards, Wim

No they don't, unless you have a not so well corrected UWA. :) Teh bent lines give it away.
Fisheyes use a projection that keeps areas or solids more or less the same, which results in straight lines being bent, except lines going through the center, while well corrected rectilinear lenses do what their moniker promises: they keep straight lines straight, be it with an extreme perspective.
When you look for it, you'll see the difference, even at 17 mm fisheye.
Kind regards, Wim

The straight lines are the ones going through more or less the center, which is what I mentioned. That is happening in pic 2, but there are many lines which are bent, still :).
Pic 7 was taken at 17 mm, and that was the luck or skill of the photographer, to make it look that straight. However, the lanterns still do have an unnatural bend. :) The closer you get to a 90 degree AoV, with fisheye, the more natural it will look.
Kind regards, Wim

Guys how do you find this lens at 10mm at the min aperture, f3.5 and 17 mm at min aperture f4.5, is it still sharp as if it was at say f8?
I just got a Sigma 12-24, for my MK3, and really not happy with it, ( I can send it back) I know it is prob a bad copy and there are better copies, but I like the fact the Tokina is faster.

Could anyone please post a example of a shot at 10mm, then that shot 'de-fished'? I'm starting to think that this is the lens for my wide angle fetish rather than the 10-20, 10-22, I just can't get wide enough (I've rented both). Also: At 17mm, this lens is roughly as wide as a 10mm rectilinear, right?

17mm fish is roughly 12mm rectilinear.
As for defishing, you do lose resolution as you get to the corners, so it's not the absolute best way to shoot, but sometimes it's better than nothing, as you can't get that wide on a rectilinear unless you have the Sigma 12-24 on full frame.
Here are two at 10mm defished:
First, full fisheye at 10mm:

And now the same shot defished:

Haven't had a chance to take mine out and about yet. But, I did play in the back-yard a bit. So, in the interest of this thread, here's a couple shots.
Not exactly my intended purpose for buying a fisheye but it does demostrate the sharpness and color you can get from the Tokina. And, I never thought I'd do many shallow DOF shots with this lens :)
Very little cropping, and minor LR2 adjustments.

A couple more. I'm still getting use to this perspective, so more back-yard shots.
If we get any color this year, the Tokina should make for some interesting photos.

This looks like the lens for me!
I've been looking at a wide angle and a fish eye lately but the cost of two lenses was putting me off a bit. But to get a fisheye thats not too fishy at 17mm its exactly what i want.
I'm a bit worried though, it looks like your not able to put a uv filter on this lens to protect it. Is this right?
_aravena
17th of January 2009 (Sat), 09:36
Right but it still makes for a great lens. You shouldn't really use this all the time where you can't be careful enough with it. That's how it is for any fisheye though.

Just got this over the weekend. Gave it a walk around in downtown Seattle on Sunday. Probably the weirdest day of weather I've seen, starting with heavy snow in the morning, which quickly turned to rain, then clear skies and sunshine, followed by heavy heavy rain and dark clouds as far as the eye could see, and then more clear skies and sunshine the rest of the day... oh and of course there were intermittent gusts of 50+ mph winds =)

Here are two from today on my 1Ds Mark II, at 15mm. The first one has part of the top of the image cropped out, and it's been mostly defished with PT Lens. The second one is uncropped out of camera (and I made it big since fisheye shots just seem to look better big) Great little lens. The corners are a little soft on the 1Ds II, but still very good.
