Biggest newbie questions ever.

First off. One of the most popular cameras I see on this forum is the 10D.
My question is what camera is this?


My second newbie questions is:

I should have my first camera by tomorrow, well first next to the 5 year old logi-tech webcam I have.

What are some good newbie sites to check out? I'm looking for tips on photography for someone just getting started.

I've read about a few rules on this forum, like the rule of thirds?
I didn't receive a rule book when I signed up... so where's it at?! :)

Before too many of us invest any of our blood, sweat, and tears into answering this broad a question, it would be helpful to know what kind of camera you intend to buy. If you haven't decided on a particular camera model by now, you're way behind on your research and probably should hold off a while. If you're buying a 10D (a digital SLR), then you should already know that it doesn't come with a lens, and that should become part of your buying decision process (i.e. which lens?).

BTW, if you don't know what an SLR is, then you probably should be browsing other forums like Fred Miranda, for example. They have a lot of novices over there. :wink:

Since you used an emoticon, I'm guessing you know what the rule of thirds is. If not, it's not a rule at all; it has to do with photo composition and it's only a 'suggestion'. If it was a rule, it would have to be considered among the most disregarded on the planet.

Personally, I prefere the rule of 5ths. (for the benefit of those unfamiliar with US alcoholic packaging conventions, most 'hard' liquor is shipped in 1/5 gallon bottles---about 80% of a quart. They're commonly referred to as 'fifths'.)

Anyway, tell us what camera you're buying tomorrow. If you don't know, then tell us what type of camera are you buying. If you don't know that, have you considered watercolors?

Sorry about not being more detailed with the post. I've purchased a Powershot G3, just waiting for the FedEx driver now.
The delivery date was set for tomorrow, so if everything works out I'll have it at my door sometime after work! :)

Again keep in mind I'm very new to all of this. Is the 10D the same as a rebel?
I'm not familiar with SLR cameras, in fact I only have an idea of what it stands for.

I would make a big mess using water colors :shock:

I guess one is never too old to learn something new. I've heard of "fifth" used with alcohol before but I never knew exactly what it was and never cared to look it up. Iin my younger days, I much rather prefered gulping them down rather than taking the time to learn something about them figuring any learning I did would have been wasted because the alcohol would have killed off that brain cell that held the new found knowledge anyway! :mrgreen:

That's really a funny coincidence Tom, I was just cruising through some Ansel Adams '32-'45 photos thinking he used some rule of fifths, not the liquid kind. I find he used the rule of curves, the rule of semi-symmetric shadows, the dramatic moments of light, but I really don't see much in the way of rule of thirds.

The Digital Rebel has different names in different parts in the world: it's called Kiss Digital in Japan, and 300D in Europe and other places.

The 10D is the big brother of the 300D.

There's also the 1D Mark II and the 1Ds, which are very expensive professional digital cameras.

The D30, D60 and 1D are older digital SLR cameras by Canon.
