I am not sure if this is the correct place to ask this question if not please feel free to move it but I need a little clarification regarding the uk law on nudity.

I know photographing pornography all model must be 18 years old that is black and white. But what is the law on artistic nudity? The socttish sun newspaper did a lot of photos with topless girls who were 16 and 17 is that legal?

I am asking as I have been asked to do some artistic nudes of a friend but they are only 17. I dont want to break any laws so looking for some clarification.

Also I know when shooting photos of babies they are often naked in bath tubs etc at what age does that become illegal and fall into the realm of inappropriate.

I just need some solid clarification before i proceed as i have said i do not want the police to turn up at my door.

Many Thanks

As far as I'm aware they have to be over 16 (not legally a child anymore) but until they are 18 and considered an adult by the law, they must have parental consent.

This only applies to glamour photos though. Didn't Samantha Fox do Page 3 at 16 years old?

PS. This is only my understanding of it, and by no means should you take it as gospel!

I think Jays pretty much right there. Just make sure that a Parent or Guardian signs a consent form AND you might want to have them present (along with your own female "helper") at the shoot.

On a personal note, I must admit that I'm not sure I would do it - but if they are a friend, and all your bases are covered (and you do verify that it's all legal) - then why not?

Is this for their own personal portfolio? Make sure it's also down in B&W how these photo's are to be used. (for their sake as well as yours)

A newspaper must be pretty sure of their standings to run such images ........ or they can afford better lawyers than you!!

Maybe wait a while until the girl turns 18? and then you know for a fact where you stand

Make sure she signs a model release and make sure her parents sign it also giving their consent!
