View Full Version : odd question about reviewing files

I am used to connecting my D-30 to the upstairs television, and directly deleting less than breathtaking images from the ones I've taken that day before working on the rest on my computer. I found out quite by mistake one day that I may have been deleting some of the better ones as well. I ran though a bunch of images none of which were that great, but I didn't delete them and subsequently downloaded them into my computer. I was stunned to find out that some of the "bad" ones were actually quite acceptable when I looked at them on my moniter. Which brings to mind my question albeit an obscure one I'm sure, is the image that is shown on your tv (as opposed to your computer) an enlarged version of the thumbnail file or the .tiff file?

I think the issue is more that your television doesn't have the resolution your monitor does. As a result, you aren't really seeing all the details in your image when viewing it on the television. I think the idea with the television is really only for quick viewing on a larger screen than your camera's LCD display. I wouldn't rely on it for determining whether an image is good or not though. Surely someone here will be able to offer a more technical explanation to the differences you're seeing. ;)

Actually you will never find a .tiff file on your D30 as this is uncompressed and the only option for uncompressed straight from the camera is raw. You can then convert the raw to uncompressed .tiff or linear .tiff on a pc. All other quality settings are .jpg and I'll bet what you are seeing on the tv is the embedded thumb from the D30, not the actual image.

As Kharim points out, the resolution of a monitor makes even these embedded thumbs look better than they ever could on a tv. Even so, tv culling of your images may not be all that bad an idea but you really need to know what you are pre-viewing and adjust your "acceptable" curve accordingly or yes, you may be deleting some nice shots.
