Taking a 20D and 17-55 to the Sierra for a 5 day backpacking trip. I was thinking about a Lowepro Toploader 1. Looking for something that is not bulky and can be stashed away with ease. If I take other lenses I will use a lens case. Any others to consider?

I use a top loader strapped to the front of my backpack suspension - works great and is easily accessible. You could strap on some accessory lens cases but I would carry extra stuff/lenses in your backpack wrapped in something soft. For a five day backpack weight will be an issue, you do not want any more gear/camera carrying accessories then you need.

Well, I assume you'll have a large pack that you are carrying your backpacking gear in...so what I have done in the past is leave enough space at the top for my camera w/lens and just wrap the whole unit in a protective cloth, such as a chamois or something padded. I also take a few small pouches to put all the little bits in, and any extra lenses in separate lens pouches, and then tuck them in where they fit.

You can access the gear easily during the day, and then after unpacking at night, have a spot to put your gear. I have tried the "take a separate camera bag along" method, and after the first few klicks, I got fed up with it.

I carry a small camera bag, like a top loader in the top of my main pack when doing strenuous climbs or descents or going through thick brush. I have it rigged so that on easy trails I can clip it to the front of the shoulder straps near the sternum strap. That way I can easily get the camera out without having to take off and open the pack. The camera case is mounted high enough that it is not likely to catch on things and is more or less out of the way.
