View Full Version : Need to decide on a new lens

I am about to buy a new lens, and have the selection I need to decide from narrowed down to three (& maybe two) lenses:
(1) Canon 75-300mm USM--the non-IS version; (2) Tamron 75-300mm with autofocus; and (3) Sigma 70-300mm.
A few questions: I definitely want autofocus capability, so is the Sigma even worth getting? I have used the Canon a bit and like it. Does anyone feel there's a definite advantage of the Tamron over the Canon, or visa versa? How's the focussing speed of the autofocus on the Tamron, image crispness, other qualities of the lens, for those of you with experience with it?
Thanks for any comments, advice, suggestions, etc.

If the Sigma's meant for the EOS cameras, it's also AF even if the literature you may have seen doesn't explicitly mention it. And of the three, that's the one most people here will recommend.

Sig 70-300 APO. Save $40-$50 getting one off here. Loved it when i had it.

I have the 75-300 canon, I was never overly thrilled with it.

I'd probably get the Sigma or the Tamron one.
The Canon version is built the worst and really not sharp past 200mm at all.

So long as the Sigma is the APO version, it is optically the best of the bunch, followed by the Tamron...but the USM focussing of the Canon ( remember they also make one that doesn't have USM focussing so if you think you are getting a cheap deal check again!) is the best autofocus of the three lenses.
One thing to bear in mind is that at 300mm there is a LOT of camera shake, so you will need a good tripod. I'd suggest seeing if you can't save a bit longer and wait to ge tthe Canon EF 70-300 IS USM - as the IS is invaluable, and optically it is the best of the genre.
You might also want to consider the Ef 100-300 lens - which is optically a winner too.
Another option would be to go shorter and consider the 70-200 f/4 lens, which is optically superb - if you can live without the 200-300 range!
