Hey everyone I recently bought a powershot a40 I was really happy about the manual options but I was upset about no manual focus does anyone know of a canon camera in the range of 300-350 dollars with this feature?

Nope, Canon currently doesn't make a cmera with manual focus in that price range... I think you have to go to the G2 and above to get that feature...

My mistake... Manual focus is available on the S30/S40 as well...

Yeah, but it's tough to use on the S30/S40. To engage manual, you have to hold down a button with your left hand, then adjust the focus with your right hand. If you don't get it right in that one action, then you have to cancel it and do it again. It would be more useful if they made it an on/off setting that you can adjust with one hand, as with exposure, etc..

I think the main purpose was to allow you to lock the exposure on a shot, press the button to engage manual focus, then leave it on that focus range. You can then stop pressing the shutter button and put the camera down, but you can't do anything else until you take the shot or disengage manual focus. I suppose it's useful if you want to recompose a shot, but I find it easier and faster to hold down the shutter, recompose, and shoot. The intermediate action is largely pointless.

It'd be nice if they'd change the manual focus operation in the next firmware, but I doubt that'll happen.

Is this the same for the G1/G2?
